Why does my dog growl and show his teeth, but then lay on his back to pet his belly?

He has done this for three years. I think he likes it. He does this to me, my husband, kids, stangers

The growling and baring of the teeth, for many dogs, is part of what it has learned during play. It has toys like a ball, tugging rope, or stick ….. . ….. that often has a similar psychological effect as a bone.
. In some games it is saying “… that is my …” as if to tempt you to try to take it off him.
Dogs find it satisfying, whether or not you accept the challenge. ….. . If you do, the dog has the satisfaction of play fighting to retain possession. . If you don’t, it has the satisfaction of thinking that it has scared you off from accepting the challenge. . The stroking is predominantly a reminder of his mother licking him when he was a puppy, and it is comforting. . All in all the behaviour says I want to play and be made a fuss of. .

bipolar!? Really, it could be a play-growl. If he/she lays on their back after, then they are most likely playing with you.
