Firsttt, go see a vet make sure he doesn’t have any pain or etcc. If that’s not the case he may be forgetting your in charge, your the leader. You should try and strengthn your bond, exercise him, feed him etcc. Maybe he has a lack of exercise, if none of these is it I would consult a proffessional about this. You need to show dominance. You can’t let him win because you have to be the ‘alpha dog’. If he gets away with growling and bearing his teeth at you, thats his way of making you step down as leader and him taking your place. Normally in the wild, a pack of dogs have a leader dog, (you) and sometimes the other dogs will challenge the leader dogs for the place of leader (this is what your dog is doing). In the pack, they would fight to the death and the winner is the leader. You must not let your dog win. Or he will start biting and not listening to you.

You have to tell him off very sternly and put him in time out for 10 minutes. yell at him, give him a little smack and let him know you are the boss. You cannot give in to this or he will get dangerous.

If this just started out of the blue, then the first thing you need to do is take him into the Vet and have him checked over. He’s a large breed, so 6 years old is ‘middle aged’…anytime an animal makes a sudden behavioral change, he needs to be checked for physical ailments.

If it turns out that he’s healthy, and not in any pain…then you have a leadership problem…he’s jockying for the alpha position. Has anything happened in your household, someone come in, someone leave…has the dog been left alone more…anything you can think of that has changed? If he is obedeince trained…ie, knows his sits, downs, stays…heels on a leash…then you need to start taking him thru his paces everyday…not so he knows them better, but to establish who is the leader. You should also be the one to feed him. NILF (Nothing in Life is Fee)…he MUST do something for anything and everything…like sit before you feed him…make him down before he can get a treat…all these things help establish how he sees you…he is the follower, and you are the leader.
