How do you deal with finding out you're slightly insane?

Diagnosis of schizophrenia is making my world crumble. What I thought was psychosis is bigger and could possibly mean the death of the few dreams I actually have… how do you deal with that?

Answer #1

Just because you have been diagnosed with schizophrenia doesn’t mean the end of your dreams, there is not so much discrimination against mental illnesses as there was, there is nothing holding you back from achieving your dreams:) you can do anything you set your mind to:)

Answer #2

No one would really know if they are slightly insane until someone else tell them.

Answer #3

Did you get diagnosed by a doctor or are you self diagnosing yourself?

Answer #4

It’s not the end of the world, it doesn’t affect anything you might want to do. Don’t let anything hold you back. Mental illnesses can be overcome, be strong and follow your dreams.

Answer #5

I agree … only 2 days ago, you were asking if you have dementia, in which an answer was submitted saying that there was a possibility of schizophrenia. There is no way that, within this time, you’ve managed to see a doctor and secure a legitimate diagnosis. How about you make that appointment before you start telling people you’re insane.

Answer #6

I did get an appointment with a psychologist how said He was almost sure I have Schizophrenia, but that my diagnosis was completely certain because of how close schizophrenia and psychosis are. I got it so fast because my aunt who is currently suffering from Psychosis pleaded with her doctor to get ma an appointment. Also, I don’t want to sound rude, but the last sentence of your statement was hurtful and I don’t appreciate it.

Answer #7

Yeah .. I don’t believe you. Nobody has that kind of power over the medical system.

Answer #8

well you just deal with it i am told all the time im insane with some of the stupid things i do. lol my friends say its amazing im still in one peace.i get into fights i climb really dangerouse things and do just some dangerous stuff my motto is yolo oh and my mom wants me to get diagnosed for schizophrenia.

Answer #9

Many people who struggle with different challenges do reach their life goals and live rich lives. Also, diagnosis of mental disorders is not cut and dried. There are other conditions that can cause symptoms like those of schizophrenia. Your doctor should rule out physical causes (stroke, tumors, brain injury), serious mood disorders, post traumatic stress syndrome, etc. Once other causes are ruled out the criteria for diagnosing schizophrenia are subjective; there is no lab test for schizophrenia. I would not consider a diagnosis after a single examination to be definitive. Your dreams have not been crushed. If your doctor lead you to believe that your prognosis is hopeless than you need a different doctor.

Answer #10

It’s not power over the medical system, it’s one man who works in an incredibly small town for little pay doing a favor for one of his patients. maybe if I lived in some big city I would have waited a while, but where I live we have 2 store’s, a psychologist and are in close range to a food lion. We have to drive almost an hour to the nearest walmart. This guy does therapy for a very small amount of people and he has time to spare for a mental analysis and diagnosis. The “Medical system” was “Hey, drop by on Tuesday at 8:00, I’ll see what I can do.” I don’t know what I did to get your knickers in a knot, but I would be very grateful if you would try and be a little more tactful.

Answer #11

Attention seeking. Just based on your previous posts, you want there to be something wrong with you.

Answer #12

Make sure you get fully and proper diagnosed. People are misdiagnosed all the time…

Answer #13

@ Administrator Pumpkin I’m not attention seeking! WHY do people say things like that? And yes I hoping it wasn’t normal to see things that aren’t there and be scared all the time. Because life would really suck if that were true. @ Kahili The doctor actually told me there was the possibility of misdiagnosis because He’d only seen me once about it and how closely it relates to problems in my family line. He told me I should go back a few more times for a solid diagnosis. But he did confirm that I’m not mentally sound due to the nature of the things I see. I’ve been trying not to freak out because of it. Though, I’m wondering now if it isn’t a relief to finally have it confirmed that there is something wrong with me and that the things I saw that kept me up at night aren’t REAL. You have been helpful. Thank you.

Answer #14

Azza is right. Insanity has never stopped lots of great people, artists, authors, actors, newspaper vendors, bakers, olympic athletes, moms, dads, aunts, uncles, and on and on. Other peoples’ opinions are interesting, but your opinion of yourself is the most important. You are unique and can do whatever you want if you really want to, regardless of someone elses diagnosis. What do they know? they may be insane too!

Answer #15

No problem. It also depends on the doctor, some doctors will say you have one thing while others will say you have another. I can guarantee you’re not alone with those symptoms though. Just try not to freak yourself out too much by jumping to too many conclusions. If you believe you aren’t well, you’ll get sicker. It’s all mental.

Answer #16

I am not doubting the words or professionalism of your doctor, but calls on mental disorders should be made by psychologists, counsellors and other such professionals, not by general practitioners. Schizophrenia does have a prominent genetic component, but just because it may explain issues in your family does not mean that you have it. Try not to put yourself down too quickly or self-diagnose here. There is a lot of bad information out there. Like filletofspam said, some psychological symptoms are actually physiological in origin (e.g., from strokes, high arousal, dr*gs / medications). Kahili put it perfectly, you are only going to frighten yourself if you self-diagnose or ponder over this way too much. As for attention-seeking, I would say that you have done the right thing by asking people for help and trying to get some explanations for your problem - this is a normal and healthy thing to do. I disagree with Administrator Pumpkin regarding you wanting there to be something wrong with you BECAUSE you’re an attention-seeker. My impression is that you want there to be something wrong with you because you want an explanation for what you have experienced, and are looking for some closure. For this reason - although you said psychologists are hard for you to access - I would recommend that you take the time to see a psychologist. The information they give you will be much different from that which the doctor gave you.
