Conversions

I’ve been trying to do my Physical Science homework, and I’m just wondering if any of yall can help me out with a few of the questions. Thanks

1.) The Tent meteorite, found in 1897 near Cape York, on the west coast of Greenland, is the largest mereorite exhibited by any museum. It has a mass of 30,883 kg. How much is the mass of this meteorite in milligrams?

2.) Speed skater Kim Ki-hoon, of South Korea, won the 1000 m short-track race in the 1992 Olympics with a time of 90.76 s. How many milliseconds did it take to finish the race? How many centimeters long was the race?

Answer #1

I won’t do your homework for you but I’ll try to help explain how to do conversions:

You need to use conversion factors and multiply them together until all the units cancel out and you’re left with an answer in the units that you wanted. This is easiest to do with fractions.

There are 1000mg in one gram and 1000grams in one kg. Let’s convert 3kg to mg.

3kg (1000g/1kg) (1000mg / 1g) Notice that the units of kg cancel out and the units of g cancel out. You are left with units of mg and the answer is 3,000,000mg.

Read the divide symbol as “per” or “for every.” 3 kilograms times 1000 grams per kilogram times 1000 milligrams per gram is 3 million milligrams.

How ‘bout 5.2 seconds to milliseconds. There are 1000ms to one s.

5.2s * (1000ms/1s) = 5200 milliseconds.

Let me explain how this works: You know that you can multiply any number by 1 and it is the same. For example: 15 1 = 15. Similarly, 15 (100/100) = 15 because 100/100 reduces to one.

We are doing the same thing with unit conversions. 1000mg divided by 1g is one because 1000mg is equal to 1g. 1000g is equal to 1kg.

Does this help?
