Confederates the good guys or the bad guys?

were the Confederates the good guys or the bad guys?

Answer #1

Well, they lost, so they were the bad guys. That’s how history works.

Answer #2

History is kind to the victors. The history books are also written by the victors. Believing in slavery was a small part of the whole thing. Many Southerners did NOT beleive in slavery, and kept no slaves. Many Northerners DID believe in slavery and did keep slaves. Like any civil war, there were many issues, and many people chose one of those issues - in this case, slavery - as a rallying point. The civil war was terrible, cruel to both sides, and many good people lost their lives. Neither side was truely right, or wrong.

Answer #5

In the most general sense a confederate is a person who is aligned with a plot or plan. In this use it already has slightly negative connotations but is used to describe someone who is aligned with any plot or plan, good or bad. In the US civil war confederates were the Southern states who wished to succeed from the union. Southern states were afraid the North would outlaw slavery and destroy their way of life and thought states should have the right to nullify laws they disagree with. During the civil rights struggles Southern states argued they should have the right to make their own laws regarding segregation and civil rights. Ronald Reagan while governor of California fought for a statute to nullify federal laws against landlords discriminating against minorities. States that want to allow medical use of marijuana also argue that they should not be subject to federal laws that prohibit this. Most currently some states argue they should not have to comply with health care reform asserting that states not the federal government should make laws regarding health care. Many people today who argue for more state rights and a weaker federal government idolize the confederate states struggle against the union even though they universally oppose slavery which was the state right they were asserting.
