Can cold weather (-40) cause me to have a week long migraine?

i missed a few days of school and had to wear sunglasses on the days i did go. Its been -35 to -43ish for the past week and I do usually get sick when it gets this cold but it is usually more flu like symptoms (vomiting, fever, lack of energy ect…)

Answer #1

No way to tell. usually no, migraines that last a week long is not due to the cold. It could be some serious infection that you have (I get migraines which lasts long when I have kidney infections) or it could be something a lot worse. SEE A DOCTOR.

Answer #2

No it may cause plenty of discomfort, but it would not cause migraine like symptoms for a week. This needs to be checked out by a Doctor. The condition maybe serious, and is most probably treatable with rapid recovery.

Researchers are debating whether the weather causes headaches or not. Intense cold is a trigger for some migraine sufferers so it’s wise to ensure you are dressed warmly for cold weather with particular care given to a thick insulating hat that covers your head well. There is also the suggestion that it is not so much the weather type itself but the change that accounts for headaches. For more info, see: http://funadvice.com/r/bg3jp8l2n8t I suffer from severe migraines and they only hit hard in winter. My doctor has given me some pills so if it’s severe, just get a doctor to prescribe you some pills.

Answer #4

I get them a week long at times and I had to go on pills. Get it checked out.

Answer #5

It could be just becauee meaby the cold keeps you shivering all the time. Meaby you have had a lot of stress lately, been thinking too much or something. Did your hit your head recently? The best thing to do is to go to the doctor if you really don’t know, what is causing this.

Answer #6

i haven’t hit my head lately but i am starting to stress about graduating in june but when i stress out i usualy feel it in my back and shoulders more than anything.

Answer #7

the barometric pressure could cause a migrane. atleast that’s what research determined when i did my science project for nasa in high school. but a week long, you should check with your doctor. Are you under stress? that’s a huge factor. or not getting enough sleep?

Answer #8

I agree and migraine like symptoms lasting more than 2 or 3 days at most need to be investigated and treated.

Answer #9

The cold can cause headaches and make them worse if you are prone to them anyway, but you shoudl always check with a GP if you have prolonged migraines. It may not be down to anything more than the weather and stress (even if you say you feel it more in your back and shoulders, stress is a major contributor to migraines and there will be some link there), but it is best to ask and see what they can advise you will help.

Just make sure you relax every evening as much as you can. Take a nice bath or shower to warm you up and do something you enjoy, like reading or listening to your favourite music. Writing a journal can also help with stress so maybe record your feelings about your upcoming graduation and it will help you get them out and rationalise them a little so you worry less. Give yourself that one time a day, when you write, to think and worry, but the rest just cast it from your mind and when it crops up just dismiss it with ‘I will save these thoughts for later, when I have time to deal with the properly’.

By dealing with your stress, as well as helping fight the cold with warm hats and clothing and making sure you stay warm when inside, you will hopefully help your head feel much better. In the UK, we also have a product called 4Head, which is a little stick of herbs and balm, which you rub across your head when it aches. I am not sure how it works, but it really does and it is a great natural remedy. Try looking for some of that in a drugstore and it may help you take the edge off your migraines like it does with mine :)
