Cigarette tax in new york

allright, now im pissed. the new smoke tax started today so I bought a pack to see what there at, almost 8$ for a pack of smokes, highest in the nation. they say that there trying to encourage people to quite by raising the tax. who the hell is the government to tell me I can’t smoke. its my god dam human right of free choice. the tax is as expensive as the product itself. do you think that should even be legal, to tax a product as much as it costs. I sure as hell don’t think thats legal. and you know who it hurts, the general population. what about those parents who smoke and have 5 kids, because there going to keep smokin. And thats going to take away from there children, god dam government should know this, SOME PEOPLE ARN’T GOING TO QUIT. and please don’t blame us smokers, thats just going to piss me off more. this is a government problem that they put upon the peple, they are taking away our god dam human rights forcefully. this is america, not a communist nation, its getting there though. everyone was doing just fine when cigs were 3 dollars a pack when I was 16. so whats next, double the cost of alcohol, anything that can tighten the economic strain on the lower class. the smokers of new york should not have to pay for the screw ups of the state

Answer #1

your right ilivm3, never start smoking.

and jimahl has me smoked, lol. I don’t know how you alway’s manage to leave me with no argument. so just to be an as* ill say this, lol. if thats the case, I want to see a double tax at fast food resaurants because of the obesity problem. which costs about the same if not more in health problems. 1 burger = about 2 cigs, you eat 5 burgers a day, compared to my ten smokes. they will have it worse than me down the road. can’t just target smokers, need to target obese people too if the states doing it for the “people’s safety”, lol.

Answer #2

of course there trying 2 make pplz quit smoking becouse its bad 4 u. you is stupid if you b smoking all the time you have no life if you smoke

Answer #3

You do have a good point piker, but of course I have an answer to that.

The proper use of the products from the food service industry does not lead to disease and health problems. The proper use of tabacco products does.

That being said, I do think that something should be done to curb the intake of high fat foods. Maybe a tax based on the fat content of the food being purchased. A salad would have no tax, and a 1/3 lb bacon cheeseburger should have like a 30% tax.

I am being slightly rhetorical here, but something should be done about obesity in this country.

Answer #4

Thanks piker, glad you liked my answer.

The drinking of tea did not cause disease and prolonged health care needs that the colonists would eventually have to pay for.

You say it is an infringement of your rights. Is it an infringement on everyone elses rights to ask them to pay for the health care of people doing something they know to be dangerous and deadly to their health.

If you didn’t smoke, this would be a completely non-issue for you.

Answer #5

no one made the original colonies drink tea either, but they liked it. and the british knew this so they placed a heavy tax knowing people would still drink it. and every american would say that tax was wrong. theres no difference in my eyes. its an extreme tax based to make 300 million a year, there not doing it for the people, there doing it to make money. and it is an infringment on my rights. as an american I should not have to pay double the price for a product while half goes to the government.

and jimahl, kick as* answer, can’t actually say anything to that except its still my right as an american.

Answer #6

No one is making you smoke. It might seem logical that the government should not be singling out smoking, because it is an individual choice. But smokers cost everyone more in medical costs. Taxpayer will have to pay for Medicare for the results of decades of smoking. And private health care costs are affected and we all pay more because of the choices smokers make. I also think alcohol should be taxed in the same way.

Could you buy them online?
