Chicks or ducklings?

Which one would you choose( the easiest to take care of and more fun)?

Answer #1

I agree with susila2. Ducklings have a slight edge on cuteness, but once they are adults, they are much more irritable, messy creatures and much less likely to enjoy your company. I’ve had chickens who became so attached to members of my family, they rode around on our arms like parrots, but all the ducks ever contributed is dropping corrosive, smelly poops everywhere they went and fouling up the pool. They also never bloody shut up.

I have a very serious question for you dear? What happens if you were to get bored with either the ducklings or chicks? The Humane Society ever year all over the US are filled with chicks every year (particularly after Easter) because so many people get tired of the chicks as they grow up, Please think hard about what you would do with these little guys IF (not saying you def will) you were to become bored with them or didn’t want them anymore after they grow out of that cute little chick phase into the, hate to say it, but not so cute big chicken phase, lol

Awesome, that’s EXACTLY what I wanted to hear!! lol Unfortunately, so many people get things such as ducklings and chicks because they’re so cute! or they give to their kids for Easter. Then, like I said before they either get tired of them very soon–particularly cleaning up after them, or they grow into a chicken and then they either abandon them somewhere or they take them to their local Humane Society. Good for you Jazzy and I;m sorry about your little chicken Chancey. ) ;’

well… I’ve had both, and ducklings (and ducks) can be VERY messy and smelly. Their excrement is much looser, wetter and stinkier than that of chicks and chickens. So if you go for ducklings, I hope you have a well-ventilated place to keep them where the smell won’t offend anybody.

And yes, ducklings can be adorable. Real personalities.

I grew up on a farm, so I have only limited experience with ducks, but a lot of experience with chickens. If, and ONLY if, you really research how to take care of them, and if you can provide the right kind of home, you should go with chickens. I would suggest only two, because it’s your first time, and it’s less to clean up after while you’re still getting the hang of it, and you’re much less likely to get overwhelmed.

Like others have said, chickens are much less messy, and they are definitely friendlier.

I would visit a local farm to check out the best food for them, and how to build an outdoor enclosure for them. Keep in mind that this won’t be easy. You can’t keep the chickens inside, because you can’t litter train them, and chickens need to scratch and dig to be happy. This is, of course, fine outside, but you don’t want them digging in your bed or something.

Also, the enclosure needs to be very sturdy, so dogs or foxes can’t get in and kill them, and it needs to be AT THE VERY LEAST 8x8x8. In addition, it can’t just be a wooden framed wire cage. Inside the cage must be a space for them to sleep, a wooden set of “cubby holes” big enough for them to fit in snugly when they’re fully grown.
