What would the chances of having twins be in this situation?
I dont know a whole lot about genetics, but my family is creeping me out. My grandfather and grandmother on on moms side were both twins. Their grandparents were also twins. My grandfather had an older sibling. My grandmother did not. There are no twins on my fathers side of the family. My family is saying my chances are high since it skips a generation….is this true?
yes it does happen.coming down each generation may or may not get it. its a 50/50 chance u may have twins
The “skipping a generation” thing is a myth - almost every family claims it, but there’s no actual truth to it - twinning is quite random. Even people who have no twins in their ancestry can end up with twins. In all actuality, there is no way to determine your chances…you either do or you don’t, and your family history has no real bearing on that.
I think anything can happen…if it is meant to be that way then it will happen. here is a little story… My grandmother was carrying twins & got sick only she didnt know she was pregnant. The doctor gave her a shot stil not knowing she was pregnant with twins…of course she lost them! No one in my family has had twins not in my fathers generation, nor in the grand kids generation either…my grandmother had 6 children not to mention the twins that fell & the 6th that passed away from an illness at a very small age. With 5 kids 3 of whom were girls had no twins…and their kids none as well…my uncle had no kids & my dad well not him either! None of my cousins have had them either meaning it jumped 2 generations perhaps the next generation may…now one knows for sure…:)
like Colleen says, twinning is random in most cases, aside from IVF where multiple embryos may be implant. Monozygotic twinning is especially random, and its very much unclear as to why it happens. Dizigotic twinning tends to become more frequent with older age due to weird things happening during ovulation as you get older. I think if you were pregnant with twins it would have been picked up by now - you can usually tell in the first trimester.
My mom swears up and down that I will have twins because my grandma was a twin, she gave birth to twins, and then one of my aunts gave birth to twins.. so we’ll see.. lol.
