What's causing my laptop to freeze?

Sometimes while I’m on the internet my computer will sort of freeze and say ‘’not responding’’… it will only last a few seconds, but it gets annoying. It’s been happening a lot more often lately. It’s only a couple of years old…. what could be causing it?

Answer #1

I know running a lot of programs at the same time will do that….but not really sure what else it could be. Old computers do that, but you said yours was only a couple years old, so i don’t know.

Answer #2

It could be many things. For example, my Firefox does the ‘not responding’ thing when I’m either loading large web pages, or when I have too much open. Alternatively, it freezes a little when my security center updates.

Do you have a lot of things running when this happens? If so, have you tried perhaps closing out on some of the services to see if it made any difference?

Answer #3

How is it freezing? It could be numerous reasons, be more specific of when it freezes

Answer #4

i cant rememeber my firefox ever going into a none responding according . but if it is your fox thats causing it it will be down to 1 of your extentions, themes or plugins… disable them 1 at a time, restart the fox after each disable and see if it helps. but as its only doing it sometimes it gonna be pretty hard to pin point the exact cause of the problem. also make sure you have the most uptodate version of java..

There is a huge list of reasons that could be happening anywhere from issue with your web browser to conflicts with other programs to hardware issues. But first off make sure your running with everything up to date - browser, Windows, anitvirus, etc. EVERYTHING. Second, I would recommend looking up the issue with whatever browser you are using (EI, FF, Chrome etc) and see if its a known and common issue - and if there are any recommend fixes. If that doesn’t fix it start keeping the Task Manager open while browsing. Keep an eye on your CPU usage and memory usage when your browser hangs/goes “not responding”. See if your CPU usage is shooting up or dropping almost to 0. Same with the RAM see if it eats a bunch of all of a sudden or doesn’t really change. Basically get some more info on the issue.
