Can my newly adopted chihuahua be pregnant?

I adopted a toy chihuahua from the animal shelter, her owner surrendered her because they had no time for her. I decided to adopt her the day after she was dropped off. For one reason or another they would not fix her. When they finally gave her to me they told me she had not gotten fixed because of her body condition (very thin). So they told me I can bring her home but return in 30 days after she gains some weight to get her fixed. Shes been with me now for 3 days but I have noticed her vulva is swollen and her titis are getting big and she has a lil pouch under her belly. I will be bringing her in to the vet in a couple of days for a check up then maybe I will know for sure if she is pregnant. Now, my question is: What happens to the pups if she is pregnant?

Answer #1

She problaly is. Abortion is an option, but if you want the puppys then you would have to get preental vitamins to keep the puppys healthy. If you decide to keep her poppys, you have a risk of either her or the puppys, maybe even bith, dieing. This risk is very high. Ask your vet about these options. He knows best.

Best of luck to you, your dog, and possibly her puppies,

Jackie

Answer #2

If she is pregnant, she sounds as if she is not in good enough condition to deliver. I would abort and then have her spayed. Your vet can do this. It is not an unusual procedure. She might not live through pregnancy.
