Can I remove black dye from recently permed hair?

Hello! I’ve read through the posts and I like the advice you give… I have a similar scenario with wanting to remove the black dye…I know you have answered this many times but not sure if the same answer would apply to me, so here is my situation…I had it dyed blonde for years..then 5 months ago, I dyed it light brown…month later went dark brown..then I permed it a month and a half ago. Dyed it black the week after I permed it…I didnt know that black couldn’t be colored over, so last week I tried dying it over with light brown store dye (obviously it didn’t do anything)….so with all that dying/perm, is it still possible for me to strip my hair now…or should I wait? if I wait, how long? my hair is shoulder length, its pretty thin as well…right now its a bit dry…but I really don’t like the black, so what do you advise? thnx!

I’m not sure entirely to whom you were addressing this. I assume it was me because of all the black hair dye advice I give. :)

First, you’re in a very delicate situation. You’ve got years of colored blonde hair under three dark hair color processes and a perm in the course of 3-5 months. That’s a lot on your hair. At this point, as a stylist, I would not feel comfortable bleaching the black out of your hair. I would take a good, one inch thick wide by 1/4 inch thick section of your hair, cut it off and test it to see how it holds up, if I would do it at all.

I would assume with all that chemicals on your hair and you mentioned it being thin, that you would suffer way too much breakage and damage. If that were the case, and your test strands showed damage, I would seriously just suggest you cut your hair off as short as you can stand it and begin growing it again. Rarely does a girl like to face the “cut it off” alternative, but you may not have a choice.

You have to do this with a professional. Have her do two test areas. Have her cut off the test strands in an inconspicuous part of your scalp. Have her try bleach on one and color stripper on the other. See how it holds up. If it breaks off and turns to shreds, then you know the only way is to cut your hair off and begin letting it grow again, or just keep coloring it and deal with it.

I wish I had a better answer for you. But the truth is that hair can only take so much. Good luck.
