Did my blown sub destroy my amplifier?

So, I just found out that my 12” Dual subwoofer was been blown for probably 3 weeks now. I had it bridged to a 2 channel Jensen A1000 amplifier, which I just destroyed. So, here’s the story.

About a month ago, my amp started going into safety mode after a short time of blaring bass. It never did this before, but I wrote it off as no big deal at the time. Then, about 3 weeks ago, my amp started blowing fuses and everytime I replaced the fuse, the new one would blow. I checked all my wiring, my ground, etc. and everything external checked out. Despite fully knowing better, I went out and got a 60A fuse and used it just to see if it would work(my amp originally used a 30A fuse). Needless to say, my amp caught fire.

Anyway, my question is, did my blown sub cause my amplifier to start blowing fuses due to a low electrical impedance, or did I just blow my sub in the same process as destroying my amp?

Also, do I want to buy a Kicker or an Alpine sub to replace my Dual?

Answer #1

Usually,it’s the other way around. A blown speaker usually creates an “open” Unless copper melted leaving a direct trail to ground,in which case would cause a “short” Too many parallel paths ie: parallel speakers can greatly reduce impedance, creating a heavier draw from your amp.. Always balance you total speaker impedance wit the impedance of your amp,for better balance & transfer of power & great quality of sound.

That’s what I thought. I think. But correct me if I’m wrong here. I had my 500W rated sub bridged to my 1kW amp and that blew my sub. This resulted in a lower impedance from my sub, thus causing my amp to draw more power and blow fuses.

That sound right?
