Is there anything I should bear in mind when buying a hamster?

This Saturday I am going to be buying a long haired male hamster. I have hamsters when I was growing up. I just wanted to ask if there is anything that I should bare in mind, things about hamsters that could be important. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

Ummm things that popped to mind is making sure the one you’re getting is a healty one, cause I remember I got one before took perfect care of it and all then it got sick and passed within 2 months!! Make sure you know it’s health and are aware of how it was previously treated. Aside from that, make sure you have the hamster’s home all set and prepared before you bring it home, make sure his new home is near an area where there’ll be a lot of people around - they’re sociable creatures and if not put in a loud space, they can become unfriendly and non sociable. Chew toys is a must!! Maker sure you invest in a sveral chewing blocks so their teeth don’t over grow!!

Those are the things that popped to mind, hope you find yourself with a happy new family member :)

yes. you need bedding thar is not made of wood chips. these can give your hamster an infection. you need to clean the cage every week which becomes a hassle. you must gove them fresh food and water every day and fruit once in a while, but not too much as it can get the runs. after giving them time to settle in, you need to play with it often. give it a chewing block because hamsters teeth never stop growing. you need to know when your hamster doesnt look healthy so you can take care of it. make sure it has a wheel and a house to sleep in, and plenty of room to play. I recommend buying a hamster guide because there is a lot to know. they should have them at your local pet store. good luck!

Answer #5

actually, they should be kept in a quiet space as they are nocturnal and should not be bothered while sleeping. but she should make sure to play with it at night.

Answer #6

get a wheel that doesn’t squeek or grind when they run on it because i had to move my cages out of my room. and if you’re gonna get two, get two cages. even if they’re the same sex. beause i had two girls and one got pregnant and i ended up with 18+ hamsters. and they bite hard so make sure they’re social and used to people at an early age.

Answer #7

hamsters are very stupid animals.

Answer #8

I’m not looking for a hamster to cook or do my work for me so that’s ok then.

Answer #9

One thing to watch out for is the water bottle, There is a cap in the bottom of the bottle right on the end where the hamster sucks on to get water, Sadly my Hamster sucked the cap out and choked on it.

Answer #10

For my hamster i make sure it has a clean cage, fresh water, food and you will want chew toys made for hamsters and a wheel. Keep it in a quiet place and maybe a ball that it can roll around the house in.
