Which articel (a/an) is more correct before the letter 'h'?

Okay I should explain that better-would you say ‘a historic day’ or ‘an historic day’? I’ve heard it both ways and I don’t really know the rule.

Answer #1

It would be “a historic day”… since the “h” is a consonant. “An” only comes before a word starting with a vowel, such as “An apple”, or An Igloo”.

Answer #2

So, just remember this simple rule: If the word begins with a consonant sound, the correct article is a. If the word begins with a vowel sound, the correct article is an. :)

Answer #3

That makes me feel better, I was wondering if I had been saying it wrong. Thanks :)

Answer #4

No problem. :)

Answer #5

very simple, It depends on prenunciation..e.g in honest, honour etc it goes ‘an’ and in others ‘a’

Answer #6

It depends on if you pronounce the “h” or not. Take the word “herb” (pronounced by many as “erb”), it would be “An herb”, but the word “house” (where the “h” is pronounced) would be “a house”.
