Why is the legal age so young?
Where I live, it’s 18 and most 18 year olds, or even older, in their 20’s aren’t mature at all, and no, I am not saying I am. But I was wondering, what made the government chose this age? some places are even younger.
I would say it is the age where you generally graduate High School and go out into the real world and make a living or go to college. By this age you should have learned enough to make good decisions. There are people who aren’t mature at that age, but there are some people in their forties and older who aren’t mature either.
I agree, most people that age are not mature at all, however the age of adulthood has to be at some point. If the government didn’t cut them off from child benefits at some point they would never grow up. Turning 18 has it’s ‘benefits’ like going clubbing and buying booze, but it also has it’s downs like paying full tax, adult charges for crimes, and your own insurance. If 18 year olds were protected from the law like children are, they would never learn. The 18/20 year olds that work full time should pay tax on their earnings like adults. I do agree, 18 is not an age of maturity for most 18 year olds, but.. You have to start somewhere!
Well, I think in our societies standards, the voting age is the legal adult age. It dropped from 21 to 18 in 1971 when the United States Congress ratified the 26th amendment. The reason for this was because of the war in Vietnam and youth activism pressuring the political system to lower the voting age. At the time it seemed like a rational decision but apparently it led to a string of effects in our modern times. They also ratified this amendment to partially overrule the “Oregon V. Mitchell” case in which the Supreme court allowed States to assign age limits for voting.
Even though there aren’t people that are mature at the age of 18, there isn’t a need to forget about the ones that are mature. Anyway, this is what I think on the subject :) Hope I answered your question! :)
