Is this healthy and is this influencing his delayed speech?

My 3 year old nephew doesn’t talk yet. A few words of jibberish sometimes comes out. the mom wants him to speak German so she only speaks german to him. At day care they only speak english to him.

  1. Is this healthy and is this influencing his delayed speech?
  2. what resource is available to assist him to learn to talk?
Answer #1

the best way to have a child grow up being bilingual is to introduce both languages from the beginning.

It may be delaying his speech somewhat, but it’s usually a temporary delay…if it seems like he has a real problem, you may need to take him to a speech therapist or have his hearing checked - it may not be the dual languages causing the problem.

I grew up with 4 languages being spoken, it didnt do anything to me… A lot of people grow up speaking one language at home and one in school/day care, it doesnt usually affect them… Since his speech has been delayed so much, he really should be speaking in sentences by now, a doctor should be consulted, just to see it isnt a hearing problem like ichi said. It may be something, it may be nothing, but a doctor is your best bet at this point.
