What happens if an 18 year old boy gets a 15 year old girl pregnant in Scotland?

I am writing an essay about underage pregnancies in the UK but mostly in Scotland. I know a few girls that got pregnant when they were under 16 and none of the boys got charged or went to jail, so I’ve got a question: What would happen if an 18 year old boy got a 15 year old girl pregnant but she turned 16 before having the baby? As I said, I am confused and really not sure how the law works in Scotland because: A 14 year old girl got pregnant by a 16 year old boy, no one got charged and nothing got said, A 15 year old girl got pregnant by a 19 year old boy, who turned 20 by the time she had the baby. He didn’t get charged or went to jail either?

So if you could just tell me what would happen if an 18 year old boy got a 15 year old girl pregnant what would happen? Or how does the law work, etc.? It would be really helpful. Thank You

The legal age of consent in Scotland is 16. I’ve been looking for laws on this, and this is what I’ve been able to find:

England and Wales

In England and Wales the age of consent for all young people, regardless of whether you are gay, straight or bi, is 16. This means that penetrative sex and sexual touching with anyone who is aged between 13 and 15 is illegal and could lead to prosecution.

If a young person is aged 12 or under, sexual intercourse and touching is an absolute offence and will be treated as r ape or sexual assault.

Scotland

The age of consent in Scotland is also 16, and the laws around sexual offences are very similar to those in England and Wales. A key difference is that sexual intercourse and touching a girl under 12, or a boy under 14, are absolute offences and so are treated as r ape or sexual assault.

So by that, it seems that if you have sex with someone who’s 15, you could get in trouble. The likeliness of getting in trouble is higher with someone younger, though. At least that’s what I’m gathering by this.

Nothing happens unless someone presses charges, which rarely happens. Underage pregnancy is a massive problem in the UK and it is rarely thought about in terms of being the male’s fault for having underage sex- as it takes two to do these things. The parents could press charges if they were really upset about it, in which case he would probably go to trial and so on, but as I say that rarely happens and parents just accept their daughter decided to have sex (assuming she was not raped- if she was then obviously charges are very likely to be pressed and be worse because the victim was a minor) and now has to deal with the consequences.

Yes underage sex is illegal and so he could be charged for it, but no one ever picks up the issue unless someone actually tells the police they are unhappy and it needs to be dealt with, in which case they would have to enquire and maybe take further action.

I live in Germany and we have a similar situation here.

The Legal age in my country is 14 if the older partner is between 14 and 20 and the legal age is 16 whatever the age of the other partner. Which is a very liberal law compared to other countries.

Yet, if a 13 year old girl gets pregnant and the father is 14 or 15, nobody will consider it a crime unless she has been forced/ compelled /raped /abused during the intercourse. People just consider it normal that teenagers experiment with their sexuality. And a pregnancy is considered an “accident” in that “game”.

Nobody here actually believes that laws and punishment will prevent any teen pregnancy. And people see that it is not solely the boys fault if teenagers have sex. There’s two to it.

My federal state has moved sexual education in biology class from 8th grade (13-14 year old students) to 4th grade, primary school in the 1990ies. So the kids get a couple of lessons on human reproduction at really young age. And later, at 6th grade (equivalent to 2nd grade of US middle school, kids are 11 or 12), they get more lessons where they learn details about human reproduction, learn about sexually transmitted diseases and about the different contraceptives and how reliable or unreliable these are. This knowledge is tested and repeated the next couple of years at school, until the last id*ot understood it, so they know everything before they start experimenting… and THAT helped reducing teen pregnancies.
