Why does the GOP leadership want to see the PATRIOT Act made permanent?

I keep thinking…ultimately, it came out that the internal sharing of information in the FBI (as they were warned, twice about the attacks) was the reason that our intelligence agenies didn’t prevent the tragedy. However, the Republican leadership thinks we need to make this act permanent…and the President also seems to think that invading our collective privacy and restricting our freedom is a “good” thing…personally, I think they are both in the wrong. OR am I missing something good about the patriot act?

Answer #1

There is nothing good about the patriot act. It is, and has been one of the worst pieces of legislation foisted upon the American people. Even if it keeps us a little safer, at what price? We could have cameras in our homes, a la 1984, and that would also make us safer. Would people put up with that? Where do you draw the line? I say the line has already been drawn when they ratified the bill of rights, and the only proper action is to completely revoke the Patriot act. Any true Patriot would reject it as an assault on the basic tenets of liberty that the constitution provides.

As Ben Franklin said (and I am paraphrasing):

Those who would give up a little freedom for a little security deserve neither…

Preservation of the state.

Most republicans are statists… this is the hallmark of neoconservatism. In my opinion, I believe/am convinced that the events of 9/11 were staged by western intelligence, and the Patriot Act which must have been written prior to the event, was always intended to be used to surveil and snuff out domestic dissidents. I do not absolve the Obama administration however. Obama has expanded wiretapping efforts. His Dept of Homeland Security has broadened the definitions of terrorism to incorporate more citizens. He has authorized the assassination of U.S. citizens deemed to be terrorists by our intelligence agencies completely ignoring habeas corpus and our 5th and 6th amendment rights. I think this eludes to the fact that the state is an entity unto itself, neither republican nor democrat nor particularly concerned with its mandate to protect the interests of the people whom it pretends to represent.
