Work or Study??

I need advice - what do you think would be better: (keep in mind I’ve been unemployed since last year but have just enrolled to study full time for 6 months)

Take a job that doesn’t pay very well at all, and work for like a year and save as much as I can while living at home and THEN go study (and have money behind me) and get a decent job at the end

or

Go and do the course I’ve enrolled in which starts next month (I haven’t paid for it yet) and study full time for 6 months and at the end of that get (hopefully) a really well paying job I will enjoy.

The thing is that I have no savings behind me now and am relying on welfare to get me by. So If I study I’ll continue to live poor for 6 months. BUT if I take a sh*t job I will be putting off study, yet I will have money to save and live on

I don’t know what to do! Help :(

Well you said this job is for sure, while you can only hope for a job at the end of 6 months, so there is that uncertainty… What exactly do you lose out by waiting to study in a year? Are you scared you wont be motivated? Or is it something else? Is there any way you can study part time? Like take one class just so it keeps you going? It is a tough one. Because you say continue to live poor for 6 months, but what happens at the end of 6 months, are you guaranteed a good job, or even a bad job?

Answer #2

I decided that I am going to go ahead with the studying and try to get a night job so I can also work while I study.. I want to study full time so I can get it over with - I lose motivation easily so part-time would be dangerous for me, lol. Thank you guys so much for your help, it really was helpful hearing it from other people. Yay for study! :)

Hey…

Studying is the best way to go. Don’t put it off for a crummy job, as here is no real point in that.

I am a struggling student myself and am so close to being done. I love all the experiences that I have had being a student, and all the people I have met have been great. The thing is, being a poor student you always find a way, because there is a light at the end of it. It is just a temporary situation for you, and there are usually scholarships that are available as well as part time jobs.

Answer #4

I’d study first. Maybe get a job on the side to jumpstart your savings. The sooner you get a job you actually like, the better :)

Answer #5

I would study. It may suck living on welfare, but you can live on it. 6 months of poverty doesn’t seem like such a big deal.

Answer #6

Hmm. That does change the situation a bit. It really is up to you what you want to sacrifice. Again, is there a way to do both? It may take longer, but at least you’ll be earning money in the mean time?

Answer #7

I suggest you take the job and when you have the money, take the course. :) The thing is, if you go to school now and hope for a job being there when you get out, you’re gambling with your finances. If you can work for a year and save up the money you need in order to go to school and get by- then I suggest you do so. In the end, it’s your decision so I hope you do fine either way. :D

Answer #8

I would study first. I am in the same type of situation. I am relying on government loans to get me through for the next 2 years and then I’ll be working…but the good thing is that I allready have a job - guaranteed.

So I say study…it might be tough now…but it’ll get better once you have the skills necessary.

Answer #9

The thing is, all the ‘ideal’ jobs I’ve applied for they have said I have a great personality and interview really well but I just lack in the skills they need. Basically they said if I had this qualification behind me they would hire me on the spot (diploma of business administration) so that’s why I enrolled to do it because I keep getting told if I was qualified I’d have the great job that I want by now.

Answer #10

I would study 1st so you can get a reali good job quicker hope this helps xxx

Answer #11

hmmm it seems you should study first ???

Answer #12

Priority should be the studies - opens doors and puts you closer to a good income / quality of life.
