Why won't the English get out of northern Ireland?

Now I’m Irish and I’ve been learning about the history of Ireland and what I don’t understand is why Ireland cannot be a united Ireland instead of a Ireland divided. I mean after all the violence there. I’m not trying to offend anyone I just want to know. Erin Gu Brath

The Northern Ireland populace is composed of mostly English and Scottish borderlanders by descent. They have been there since Oliver Cromwell and the plantation period.. about 400 years now. During the Scottish diaspora to the new world… Northern Ireland lost a lot of its protestant settlers… this allowed for more admixture between the Irish and British… but even to this day… the British population hasn’t been incorporated into the Irish whole. Though the residents rightfully call themselves Irish by regional desciptive… they are Britsh by lineage.

I understand why Irish people detest the encroachment… the plantation period was a hostile period of history. Like others have said… the British have been there for quite some time now… and history writhes with nations of people invading other nations land and settling… right and wrong are a matter of which point of view the opinion is coming from. Being descended from those plantation settlers… my point of view… Northern Ireland’s population deserve the right to sovereignty… or political union… despite what the rest of Ireland wishes.

The Ulster Scots have an argument that Northern Ireland being the homeland of the Scoti… a return to their ancestral birthplace… Dál Riata… is as legitimate as any Irish claim.

the IRA made a stand in Ireland, but the fact is some English have been living there for awhile now, you can’t just wish them away.

Answer #3

why wont the IRA piss off and stop killing innocent people?

They have… Did you say the same thing to the protestant loyalists? They did there share of killing also…

While I have never condoned the IRA’s tactics, I am fully sympathetic to their cause. Ireland should be reunited.

And there are many irish living in england. Should england be split in two because of it? They are not really english, they are irish protestants. And they are afraid that if the north becomes part of the republic they will become a minority.
