Why won't my Dacshund gain weight?

I have a female dacshund, about a year old and she was injured in October and lost her appetite but has since gotten over the injury but she is skin and bones but she eats like a horse, a lot and very fast. We’ve wormed her several times but she isn’t gaining. She looks like an ad for abused pets but all my other dogs are doing fine and quite fat. She gets free choice purina puppy chow and she is very active but I cannot figure out why she is so darn skinny. Please help!

I would change her food. I have been working at a pet store as a dog and cat ‘expert’ for over a year and a lot of times food is to blame. If she doesn’t have worms and the vet says there is nothing else wrong with her then I would switch up the food. Purina puppy chow is the not the most easily digested food. If you need to stay low on price I would give Diamond Naturals Small Breed Puppy a try. I recommend this because it is a fairly inexpensive food and I have seen it at many different stores (include a tractor supply store and fleetfarm). Even thought she is a year, stick with puppy because puppy food is higher in fat and protein to help growing dogs and is not uncommen to put adult dogs onto puppy to help them gain weight. Small Breed Puppy has even more protein and fat than normal and large breed puppy so that is an added bonus. If you can not find Diamond Naturals in your area, let me know what stores are available to you and if they are locally owned, what foods they carry and I can definately help you find a food that could help!

Another option is NutriCal (or something like it) it is a high calorie supplement (its like toothpaste in a tube) that you feed the dog to help it gain weight. The only reason I mention food first is because the NutriCal will help in the short term but a good food will help for life. ^_^
