Why should smoking be legal?

I want to know why there is even smoking legal in public. The people that smoke should go and smoke some where far away from the wealthy people that dont waste their money on cigarettes or kill their selves. Other people dont want to suffer the horrible scent of the smoke and I sure dont either. My Aunt just died cause of lung cancer from smoking 1 week before christmas. Im against smokers and smoking. I hate the smell and every little detail about it. I learned a lot about this in school and people that tried it well thats their fault. I need more answers and details about this question soon. This is for my school history class project, were debating on this. Thanks! Julianne

haha I like that idea! People can do whatever they like to themselves but smoking means it affects other people too. Smokers are always going on about how important their rights are, never mind the fact that they are taking away the rights of non-smokers when they choose to smoke in public places (indoor or outdoors).

Answer #2

Well then…since it’s the SMOKE that kills ya, not nicotine (which is as about as physically harmless as caffine), then we better rethink legalizing the smoking of pot…since SMOKE is what kills ya.

Maybe legalize liquid nicotine and liquid THC…and leave all smoking behind.

Hi, you pretty much summed up everything that’s against smoking. Now here’s somereasons why it’s still legal:

In the middle ages, there were no laws against certain substances. So people could take whatever drug they wanted. If they could get it somewhere. Almost everyone could get alcohol. All other drugs were extremely rare and expensive. So nobody really used them. Then, later, as ships became better and new land was discovered worldwide trade established. Means, people could actually get whatever they wanted. Now there was some stuff that really made people snap. Like absinth, opium and the like. And governments started to forbid that. But by that time, tobacco was so widespread, that forbidding it would have led to mass protests. So they didn’t dare to.

  • in a democracy, if the majority of people want something to be legal, government will eventually have to make it legal.
  • cigarette industries pay taxes and employ people. Thus they have influence on politics.
  • find out how many members of your parliaments smoke. You won’t get it illegal, as long as people vote for smokers.
  • there’s taxes on cigarettes. So the if the government made smoking illegal, then people would smuggle cigarettes and still smoke. But the state would not get the money.
Answer #4

Like others have said, tobacco has been used for too long in history for them to illegalize it. Also, since there is an addictiveness to cigarettes, people would go absolutely crazy over a ban of it. With weed, they know its not so bad, they know it’s better for people than cigarettes, but they already have alcohol and cigs legal, so they don’t want more drugs being legalized

Answer #5

If it were illegal, people would still do it, and an illegal tobacco trade would fill the gap, just like the illegal drug trade has.

When will people grasp that the passing of laws does not stop pleasurable activities?

Smoking laws pretty much prohibit smoking in indoor public places already, and even in many outdoor public places. To the extent you’re faced with smoke, just suck it up and quit whining.

well, even rich people smoke in fact, heaps of rich people smoke but I dont think it should be legal for the simple fact that theres no fun in f*cking up your health and no one wants to sit around the bed of there loved one whos died from lung cancer or some other smoking related disease/cancer smoking outside however is understandable, as no one wants to be in a room, resteraunt, ect full of people who smoke unfortunantly, I dont think ciggarettes will ever be banned because too many people do it and its a huge money making indusrtry and sadly despite all thats been done to try and show people the risks (though a lot more could be done) those people generally wont learn there lesson untill there health is gone or someone they know/love has died from it

Answer #7

I agree. It’s really stupid to make it leagal. I mean really would you rather be rich and let people die who are stupid to do it in the first place and pass on second hand smoke or Have people live!! I rather let people live.. There all just selfish and won’t stop it and try to find something else that can make them get a lot of money while not killing people.. I don’t understand it my self.

Answer #8

The taxes the gov’t collects from the sale of cigarettes and theres no way to really fight off the smokers; the money they get from cigarette sales is significant, and look at marijuana, thats hard to control how would cigarettes be controlled? Personally I think the lawmakers are going too far with making it illegal to smoke in parks. They have just as much right to the air and space as anyone else, why try and take it away?

Answer #9

It should TOTALLY be illegal, I agree!!
