Why is the fullback position (american football) becoming obsolete?

One of the most classic, gritty and honest positions on the football field is becoming increasingly less needed. I believe that a power offense (when run correctly) is still relatively unstoppable. Am I wrong? Or is it because simple evolution is taking place in todays offences?

In this day and age the running game is really loosing ground. All the playoff teams ranked very high in pass numbers. The game is changing a lot and really now a days it is more advantageous to put in and extra receiver or tight end than a full back. And really a power run game doesn’t cut it anymore. I am a 49ers fan and frank gore is a beast every year and has a 1000 yard season for the past 4 years but or pass game isn’t great. Defenses are learning the easy way to counter a run offense is put 5 down lineman and like 3 backers and you can easily stop the run. That is why the 49ers started off really good then teams learned they could just put 8 in the box and they could stop them.

Answer #2

it is because the “new age” of football has arrived and it is a throwing offense. im not a huge fan of it but it makes for more exciting plays. granted FB are needed because they stil are a huge roll in offense but it isnt as important as it once was. the position I feel that is becoming a huge factor is tight end.
