Why is my puppy so scared ?

Hello, I just got my first puppy and he is 8 wks. He have worms. Dewormed on 6/26/09. He eats and drinks fine. No other signs of sickness. But why is he so scared of us and everything? He won’t bark, play, run, come to you or anything. He stays in the corner like he just wants to be left alone. This doesn’t seems normal. Also, I bought him from a shelter. German shephard mix with rottwieler. Is this normal? What should I do?

Since you got him at a shelter…you don’t know his background. Also, every pup has it’s own personality…and this might have been the shy pup of the litter…Just keep reassuring him…offer treats (so he thinks you are wonderful)…Try to keep your voice down, as loud is scary for a pup.

No punishment for accidents…think “loving patience and consistancy”… …and give him time to bloom.

my dog was the same exact way… give him some time… pet him.. snuggle with him…don’t talk very loud, whisper when you talk to him… he’ll come around trust me!!

Nah, it is normal. My cat was the same way 7 years ago when I first got him. He’s in a strange place with people he doesn’t know. He’s just a little freaked out. Just pet him and talk to him like you would talk to a baby. Maybe sing to him?

If you just got him you should take him to the vet for a good health check up and get started on a series of vaccines that dogs require. Also the vet can tell you all kinds of good things about potty training, and how to get him to come out of his shell. They should also give you a puppy kit to get you started.

He’s a baby… and he was in the shelter… so he’s in a new place, it takes them a while to get used to people and places, especially when they werent taken care of properly. One of my dogs just wandered in off the road, he wouldnt go near anyone except a female dog we had… It took a while, I’d just sit with him, he’d be hiding, and I’d just talk to him… Years later, he still didnt really like people, wouldnt go near anyone but me… I’ve tried singing lullabies to a cat, that worked pretty well too… Just give him time… Dont force anything that isnt comfortable. Usually just sitting and being there allows them to see that you arent going to hurt them, and they’ll come to you when they’re ready…
