I wasn’t super skinny at all before… and ever since I’ve been going to the gym I appear to have PUT ON weight! How has this happened? I know muscles weigh more than fat but surely I would loose weight firs right? you know all the fat?

Also how do I get my mum to stop buying unhealthy things? Its so hard to loose weight with chocolate in the house!!!

Btw what is the right weight for a 16 year old girl whose 5 ft 9.5?

9.5 to 11.5 stone (60.3 kg to 73 kg) is the medical guideline for a ‘healthy’ weight at that height.

If there was not much fat to begin with, your weight will tend to go up as you gain muscle. Ideally, if you want to tone up, you will want to do some sessions of weight training as well as basic cardio to keep you healthy. Eat a diet with plenty of protein in it, to sustain muscle development, and make sure you eat enough calories a day in order to give you the energy to exercise. Do acttivities such as skipping, to help burn fat, then do floorwork to help with muscles, as well as some weights. Aim to exercise around 4 or 5 times a week at the most, rather than exhausting yourself with every day. Also try and break from the gym by swimming on one of these days (a great activity all around), or getting friends to play badminton/ tennis/ netball etc with you.

As for your mum, explain to her that you would like to make sure you have a healthy balance diet, so you would like alternative snacks in the house rather than just chocolate. Try carrot sticks, celery with peanut butter on, frozen grapes and natural youghurt with fruit or honey as some healthier, but still tasty, alternatives. It is not fair to stop her buying chocolate if she wants it though, so just ask her whether she can keep it in her room instead of in your view to help you stick to your plan. Remember, you do need some fat and sugar in your diet though, so a lttle chocolate here and there will be fine and could even help you as otherwise you may get (and be more likely to give in to) cravings, if you deny yourself treats and food you like.
