Why dugouts?

Any idea why baseball uses a dugout? I mean obviously it is for safety when a foul ball is hit but why not just a fence? And how did it ever get started?

Answer #1

I don’t think anyone really knows why they’re dugout. It might have been to give a better view of the game from the seats behind, or to increase shade, or to reduce fencing costs back when fences were hand made.

Answer #2

a dug out is also a place for the baseball players to relax before a game, it also is used for shade. where it came from I have no idea

Answer #3

because you can sit down and relax like for pitchers to heat their arms, and you can get a drink. also to keep bags, gloves, helmets, bats and for like first aid
