Why does the doctor feel my tummy at an exam?

When I went in for a sore throat she had me lie down and lift up my shirt so she could listen to my belly. Then she pressed all around my tummy. Why did she feel my tummy when it didn’t hurt? (I just had a sore throat and congestion)

Answer #1

My doctor always does that to me, too. I’m pretty sure it’s just to make sure there’s no abnormalities…

Answer #2

Uhm I don’t know they checked mine when I had a stomach virus and they could of been checking for that cause thats all I had was a sore throat and congestion & it came out I did have a stomach virus.

Simply a Rose to brighten your day,         And maybe lessen the cares in your way;         And also, too, to help you to know,         That in knowing you, many others grow!       Welcome to Fun Advice!

My guess is that she is checking for hernias or maybe even tumors on your ovaries. I don’t think you would normally be pressing on your abdomen the way she does, so she would be more likely to detect (by you having pain) anything abnormal.

Answer #4

I think it could be related, and she was checking to see if it was. However, if you ever feel uncomfortable during an exam, ask your doctor questions! Don’t be afraid to ask why they are checking here or there and how they think it’s related. If you don’t get a straight answer tell someone you know that you felt uncomfortable during an exam and they will try to clarify the situation.
