Why does jam have to be kept in the fridge?

To me it seems harder to spread when it comes from the fridge as opposed to room temperature. I heard that it can get moldy, is that true? Well what about if I left my jam at room temperature during the winter? Would that be less bad? because when I keep it in the fridge my housemates finish it!

jam is like a jelly (like jelly, not is jelly: by jelly I mean rowntrees)… thats why its harder to spread when cold as opposed to room temp ;)

I prefer jam at room temp as I think it tastes sweeter… your gonna have heating on in winter so itll just go off quicker and yes leaving it out the fridge will have it go off, but it will only start going off once opened.. I’ve got a jar of rasberry jam in the cupboard simce xmas, unopened and its fine…

you do know that you can change the fridge temp? also leave jars of jam on the door shelf of teh fridge… why dont you just leave it in the fridge then 30mins before you wanna spread it take it out the fridge?

cold jam always spoils warm toast :)
