Why do people get drunk when they drink alcohol??

What happens in the brain when someone consumes alcohol. I know the brain shrinks a little everytime you get drunk but what does the alcohol do to your brain and why does it make you feel like it does??? I’m not random, I’m just buzzin right now and was wondering lol

Uhm Ok. No. That is not why you get drunk. Alcohol does effect the red blood cells which in turn effects the oxygen levels, but that has nothing to do with why you get drunk.

The brain is composed of different parts that have different functions. There’s nerve cells (neurons) that help with communication. The neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that help with the communication between the cells. Alcohol inhibits GABA (one of the transmitters), which increases inhibition, and it acts on the reward pathway like dopamine (another transmitter). If your really want to get into details, you can check this site out

It’s actually a complicated question and you really have to understand how the brain works. But basically what it does is slow down parts of your brain and it releases the feel good stuff.

The only part of that answer that was right was the part about dehydration.

When you drink the alcohol in your blood prevents your body from getting enough oxygen. This in turn deprives your brain of oxygen which affects your ability to process thought (because your brain is working so slowly) which is why your judgement isnt as good. It also affects your motor skills making it difficult to walk, talk, etc. because the signals your brain sends to your body are slower than usual.

In all reality you can replicate the feeling of being drunk by putting a plastic bag over your head and holding it tight so no air gets in. After a minute or so you’ll feel the same as if you’d been drinking. The only difference is when you take the bag off your head you dont get a hang over :) which, by the way, is caused by dehydration. Thats why the best way to cure a hang over is water, water, water. Drinking water through out the night while your actually drinking alcohol will also help prevent a hang over the next day.

Hope I helped.

Cheers!

beats head repeatedly against wall

every person is born with the same amount of brain cells? and that just never changes? really? where’d you learn that? seriously, either the teachers today really suck, or people have stopped paying attention in biology.

Answer #4

There is so much misinformation on this page, it’s astounding.

  1. Alcohol does not get you drunk by depriving you of oxygen. Alcohol directly affects the central nervous system and has nothing to do with limiting the amount of oxygen getting to your brain.

  2. We are not all born with the same number of brain cells.

  3. Brain cells can regrow. The idea that neurons can’t regenerate is a completely myth.

  4. Your brain does not shrink from consuming alcohol.

  5. Anyone who thinking that asphyxiating yourself with a plastic bag feels the same as drinking alcohol has clearly never done either,

thanks…that webite is very helpful…but the more I read the more it made me think that varnadore is right…because of the BAC…besides the website link your advice wasnt very helpful and it just seemed like you read my question and googled it or something and was just writing what you read…but thanks thanks thanks

lol. ok. I got the info from my substance abuse class. You know, from phds who have actually know what they’re talking about. I was trying to find a comprehensive site for it. Of course if your prefer a simplistic, albeit false answer, that is entirely your prerogative. it is easier to understand the lack of oxygen theory, I guess… (I mean it makes no sense to me, but perhaps because I’ve learned to much about the brain).
