Does white noise really aid sleep?

does white noise really work? Should I try listening to it? I’ve also been told the noise of a fan will help as well

I actually find it makes me frustrated and thus even more awake. If you still want a song to listen to I sometimes listen to Yellow Brick Road by Angus & Julia Stone, it’s a beautiful sleepy song but may be too girly for you lol. When I want to sleep I usually lie down on my back and focus on the feeling in my feet, moving the focus up my legs to my knees up my thighs and so on all through my body, it takes like 15 mins to go through my body and it’s really relaxing and helps my mind settle.

I run a fan in my room in the summer, to pull cool air in at night. The first few nights its running I have troubles sleeping but once I get used to it I sleep a lot better than without it. I think I sleep better because the noise of the fan is constant (white noise) and it covers up background noises - like cars driving by.

For extremely light sleepers white noise helps keep random noises from waking them up. My wife needs white noise to stay asleep but I sleep like a log and it doesn’t make any difference to me. On the other hand I noticed that when camping certain noises like thunder or rain hitting my tent or the corrugated roof of a cabin lulled me right to sleep. Simulated versions of the same sounds didn’t have the same effect though.

It depends on the person, for me I have to sleep with my xbox or a fan on or I can’t sleep at all. Whenever theres total silence I start listening trying to find noise and that in turn keeps me awake.
