when I start up my computer...

When I start up my computer, a box pops up and tells me that “Windows cannot find….” and that I can browse to look for this program myself. I can’t seem to find it either, so how can I make this go away? If I don’t click “ok” the start up process doesn’t continue.

Hey thanks, everyone! Problem solved…although I still can’t get “msconfig” to run…I was able to figure out how to use the Registry fix with my Spring Cleaning (from WorldStart) to make the message go away. Thanks for all the tips.

Answer #2

I run sweeps every week and it doesn’t clear the problem, also a registry cleaner tool and have emptied the temp files…nothing seems to work. I can’t even get msconfig.exe to work from my “run” menu, it’s not recognized! I have Windows XP Media Edition….any more suggestions, or is this something I gotta live with?

Answer #3

Another thing you might try is typing or copy and paste the message in a search engine such as google.com or search engine of your choice and see if you get any results.

Answer #4

c:\progr~instal~1(7dca3~1\setup.exec This looks like a setup program that you downloaded. It could be malware that was deleted by your security program or a program that you started to install and didn’t finish. Anyway, it’s in your Registry and Windows is looking for it at startup. If you have a Registry cleaner program (tool), run it. Also run anti-virus and anti-spyware sweeps.

Answer #5

I forgot to mention that you should also clean out the Windows\TEMP folder and the Temporary Internet Files folder. Make sure you delete any hidden files in the TEMP folder.

Answer #6

I don’t think I’m on a network, just a high speed internet connection through my local phone company. How can I make this thing just go away? It seems like something I’m not using anyway, so my question really is how can I get Window to stop lookking for it every time I start up?

Answer #7

Windows is looking for C:\PROGRA~INSTAL~1{7DCA3~1\setup.exec….and I can’t “browse” and find it. So my question is, how can I find it or better yet, stop Windows from looking for it so it doesn’t hold up my startup?

Answer #8

Dear iwannabemary, what OS (operating system are you using) and what can’t it find… Sue

Answer #9

Use the “System Configuration Utility” (MSCONFIG) to identify startup programs. MSCONFIG is available for all Win9x/Me/2K/XP users.

You invoke it by clicking Start then Run. In the Open box, type msconfig.exe followed by enter. Once displayed, click on the “Startup” tab. You will see a list of items and the 2 columns that we’re interested in are “Name” (WinME) or “Startup Item” (WinXP) and “Command”. For Win98 the columns aren’t named but the one on the left is the equivalent of “Name” and the one on the right is the equivalent of “Command”:

Locate the program you are getting the popup for then delete it.

Answer #10

I don’t know for sure but sounds like it is a network or internet connection of some type…are you on network? Sue

Answer #11

I run Windows XP and the program is c:\progr~instal~1(7dca3~1\setup.exec.

Answer #12

In run box, type in msconfig only. Leave off the .exe.

Answer #13

You probably deleted a progam rather than uninstalling it. What is Windows looking for?
