Whats the first thing that comes to mind when someone says "redneck"?

I think of people who wear white pointy hats, robes, and burn crosses.

The original meaning of redneck was someone who literally had a red neck from working outdoors (usually farmers). The term took on more negative connotations when it was used in a derogatory manner to describe people who were bigoted, closed minded, and racist. Many people fight the negative connotation and proudly proclaim themselves rednecks. The already mentioned Jeff Foxworthy is the most visible example. Foxworthy uses self-depreciating humor to make fun of the group but always represents them as amusingly unsophisticated but hard working and good hearted folks. The first thing that comes to my mind with redneck is a farmer with calloused hands and leathery skin from a lifetime of hard work.

I think of people who don’t use brilliant English, live in the south of the USA in small towns and basically keep a manual-labour job for most of their lives.

Being ‘bigoted, closed minded and racist’ does come to mind as well…

I think mostly people around my age or older have those memories…didn’t get more redneck then them back in the day. LOL

The kids that showed cattle at my high school, wearing their stiff blue jeans and cowboy boots and hat, with their 6 inch belt buckle displayed proudly over their tucked-in plaid shirt.

Illiterate, inbred families with bad teeth who praise the lord and carry guns.
