If there is a god will I go to hell?

Im not sure, I belive in (a) god. If there is a god will I go to hell, even if I’m a good person, just for not beliving in him or her, I’m not sure but that seems a little wrong?

Answer #1

The reason it seems a little wrong is because it is wrong. Stop and think about what you’re being told right now, mainly from the Christian point of view. If we are saved by grace, if we are saved not because of any merit on our part, but by the death of Jesus, and if faith is simply accepting what Jesus has already done, why is there an expiration date on his mercy and love? Why does his death become of no effect once a person ceases to breathe? Is it that God and Jesus are too easy to believe in, once you’ve tasted the punishments of hell? Then what is the point of the punishment? You’re also being told that those who ask these kinds of questions belong to Satan. Just think about that as well.

Questioning the existence of a god, and an afterlife is perfectly natural. Do not let fear of hell influence your decisions. The church has been using hell as a tool to scare people into conversion for centuries. Hell is a manmade concept, and is something that no person on this board or anywhere else has ever seen or experienced, and therefore knows for sure even exists.

If you have more questions about hell, I suggest you read the book “The History of Hell” by Alice Turner. You’ll see where the people who wrote the Bible got their ideas about hell, Hades, Sheol, and Gehenna, as it’s referred to in the Bible.

Answer #2

The bible says that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. He has provided a way of escape, for the penalty of sin, and that is thru his own son, Jesus Christ. He offers salvation, to whosoever will.

However, to be saved, one has to first believe and understand that he has sinned, according to God.

The problem exists in our not understanding what a holy God considers sin.

How about reading the book of John, in the New Test. and ask God to help you to understand his word, it is spirit inspired, and that same spirit helps us to understand it, when we ask.

Our righteousness is not good enough to get us into heaven. Else, Jesus died in vain. If we could have made it by ourselves, why did he have to suffer and die?

Because God is holy, and his law demands perfection. Jesus was the only man that lived up to his expectations, thereby exchanging himself, for us.

He ransomed us, back to God, from which we had fallen.

God wants us all to live with him in heaven, but, it has to be thru the blood, there is no other way.

Answer #3

“jimahl, there is no reason for you to insult God and Christians.”

Insulting god to me would be the same as insulting santa. And if calling god an IT insults you, don’t read it.

“Where is your dignity? Your honor, your integrity?”

Fully intact, thank you… Where was yours when you implied gays got what they deserved with AIDS? Or when you called islam the religion of death and satan?

“When someone has a difference of opinion with another person, it shows nobility of character if they allow the other’s right to disagree with their view point, without name calling or/and out and out insulting what they believe in. “

Please show me where I called you a name in that post? I have no problem when you post your opinion, but don’t expect it to go unchallenged. If you don’t want someone to respond to a post, don’t post it.

“It makes me think of a kid in first grade not getting his way, so he, in a fit of anger, calls the other names and such…I think it’s time to grow up.”

Again, tell me where I called you a name, or what I said that was so childish?

“You may not love or respect God, but there is no reason to insult what we believe in.”

Again, to me having love or respect for god would be the same as having love or respect for the easter bunny. Your god is of no consequence to me. What you believe in, I think is dangerous to a free society. Not all religion, but definately your particular brand of it.

And you insult other people’s beliefs constantly, so get off your high horse.

Answer #4

plain and simple. Life with a god is amazing and worry-free :) Obviously not everyone goes to hell if they don’t believe in god (becuase not everyone knows that there is a god) like infants and poor people, poverty stricken etc. most of the time. If you have had opportuinty to know god he states that we shalll give hima ll praise and preach the good news…in fact HE SENT US HIS SON TO BE CRUSIFIED AND DIE A PAINFUL DEATH ON THE CROSS so that WE wouldnt ahve to suffer and so that WE the very people that crusified could go to heaven and be with him!! Is there anymore reason to cleebrate? So it seems to me that you really want to give GOD praise but its really hard for you to give up your life…really its not GIVING anything up its amazing and life is sooo much easier. Its not about a specific religion–I hate religion–BUT I LOVE GOD. Its not about following any rules or feeling obligated to do anything its about your relationship with god and all the wonderful things he ahs done for you.

god bless!

Answer #5

If there is a god will I go to hell?

Really easy to get sidetracked here, everything is so interesting, no doubt that every mind is a world of it’s own, (no offense intended).

If your asking in biblical terms here is something of what the bible says: Matthew 7:21-28 “Not all people who sound religious are really godly. They may refer to me as ‘Lord,’ but they still won’t enter the Kingdom of Heaven. The decisive issue is whether they obey my Father in Heaven. On judgment day many will tell me, ‘Lord, Lord, we prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.” But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Go away; the things you did were unauthorized.’ (or unlawful) “Anyone who listens to my teaching and obeys me is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock, Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse, because it is build on rock. But anyone who hears my teaching and ignores it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. When the rains and floods come and the winds beat against that house, it will fall with a mighty crash.” After Jesus finished speaking, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, for he taught as one who had real authority–quite unlike the teachers of religious law.

I believe there is a God, therefore, only God will be the judge of that not man. He doesn’t want us to believe in Him because we fear Him, but because we love, respect, and trust what He offers us. through faith.

but His death does become of effect when a person ceases to breathe, if you believe in Jesus, you’ll go to Heaven, and if you don’t then you’ll go to Hell, having faith in Jesus greatly effects what happens after your last breath.

apparently, God and Jesus are not too easy to belive in, because there are so many people who don’t believe in them. once you taste the punishments of hell, there’s no coming back, that’s the point of the punishment, it’s eternal.

Answer #7

Suppose for a minute that there is indeed a god out there that has the ability to reveal itself to you in a meaningful way, but has not done so. What does that tell you about the nature of this god?

Obviously, it either doesn’t care whether or not you believe, or would prefer that you didn’t.

The typical response to this argument is that it’s somehow a violation of your free will if it were to reveal itself to you unequivocally. But that doesn’t make any sense, because you can not make a free will choice if you are unsure whether or not you even have a choice. In fact, the only way to make a free will choice is to be both informed and uncoerced. A real god that cared about such things would not only reveal itself to you, but then allow you a consequence free choice whther or not to follow it.

Further, it makes no sense that such a being would even care whether or not you believed in it - or care about anything at all. Concern is an animal instinct.

Answer #8

exactly Kat, my beliefs to a T. The one thing that’s going to be annoying about this thread, is that the religious nuts are going to tell this poor girl “Yep, the bible says if you don’t believe in god, your going to hell” or even worse, the super christians are going to say “If you don’t believe in god, are jewish, muslim, mormon, or anything other than Christian, you’re going to hell”

I hate when people spew their beliefs to other people as if it were a fact for EVERYONE.

I would love to see an intelligent christian(I know they exist) just ONCE say something like:

“Well according to the religion I believe in, blah blah blah” instead of just saying “yes you are going to hell” or “The bible says this this and this, so you will go to hell if you don’t do that. The girl straight up says she’s not sure if she believes in god, but doesn’t say what religion she was brought up as, so just assuming she’s christian/muslim/jewish is very wrong. I would be offended ;-)

Answer #9

It has nothing to do with what you do as much as what you don’t do. If you don’t accept the payment given for you and live like you have accepted it. The Price has already been paid to keep you out of Hell. It’s up to you.

Answer #10

tizuby said: : “If you want to get technical, ever uttering the phrase ‘thank god’ for something non-miraculous is technically using it’s name in vein.

God is not male, or female. ‘It’ is something that I can’t express in words, therefore I use the word it. “

When I say “thank God” I am truly thanking the Lord, but I have heard time and time again people using that term in a non-Christian terminology…which is wrong I agree.

God is male: “Let Us make man in Our image”

Calling God “it” is a HUGE insult to God and to all Christians who love and worship Him. With all do respect, please call Him God out of respect for us, thank you.

You said: “There are tribes and people whom have never come into contact with a Christian or anything even relating to Christian belief. If you’re trying to tell me, through absolutely no fault of their own, God would send them to hell when there is no possible way they could have ever heard anything about Christianity? “

No, God would not send people to hell for not hearing about Him. God wrote His laws on our hearts, so that we’d know right from wrong, and if we choose to do evil (sin) and not repent of it, then yes he will be destroyed in hell.

You said: “I believe in God, and believe that so long as you do well in life and have faith in general, than no matter your religion or beliefs, all will be well when you pass”

That’s right YOU believe, but that isn’t the way God wants you to believe according to the Holy Word of God, the Bible. God wants you to know Him and to love Him, and if you love Him then you will obey His laws. “IF you love Me keep My commandments.”

Some people think that if they are sincere in what they believe, God will accept them and save them. But sincerity alone is not enough. One can be sincere, and be sincerely wrong.

You said “Isn’t there something somewhere called the dogmatic law that says ‘What you hold true on Earth, I will hold true in Heaven’ or something similar. It was the entire basis for a Kevin Smith movie. If that’s the case, than God would have to honor”

You need to read the whole chapter or at least several verses before and after that verse you are talking about, so you can understand better what God is talking about.

God does not allow us human beings to make His laws for Him in heaven. If He did heaven would be a lot like earth, which we all know that heaven is pure, holy and perfect.

What if man made a law saying that anybody over the age of 50 must be killed (genocide), or a law stating you have the right to kill your neighbor if he doesn’t return the tool he borrowed from you. You see, it doesn’t work like that…we are to follow what God has asked us to do not the other way around.

You said a lot about Christians pushing their beliefs down non-believer’s throats, but I have been on this site for quite a while now and have not seen that happening too often. Oh sure, there may be disagreements, but most of them are from non-believers like agnostics or atheists…who are giving Christians a bad time.

All in all I think this is a pretty good site for non-believers and Christians to be able to discuss their personal beliefs, or lack of, with each other without the feeling of disrespect.

Answer #11

The Lord does not reveal Himself to us physically yet because it isn’t time to do so. He loves us all so much that He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to save us so we can live with Him thru eternity.

I have never heard of what toadly said here: “The typical response to this argument is that it’s somehow a violation of your free will if it were to reveal itself to you unequivocally.” You are right, it doesn’t make any sense toadly.

Christians know they have a choice, because we are well informed as to whom God is, what He desires of us, and what His laws are. We know God loves us, will protect us, wants us to be with Him in the kingdom, and sends the Holy Spirit to teach and guide us. God has never and will never force anybody, ever…

God is not an “it” and to imply that God is an “it” is a direct insult to us as Christians and, most importantly, to God Himself. So, please stop calling God “it”.

We are not to judge God. His ways are higher than the stars in the sky. His reasons why He has not revealed Himself to us is because sin has not yet reached it’s fullness yet, but is almost there. When it is He will come. Probation is closing…be ready, be ready, be ready!

God gave His all for us. He wanted to show us how much He loves us, so He sent Jesus, His only begotten Son to this sinful, darkened world to show us the way. Jesus knew He would be tortured and hung on a cross, but He came anyway, because of His great love for us.

Our Creator is a God of pure love. He will do everything in His power to save as many as He can, but we need to be open to His leading thru the Holy Spirit. If we allow God to draw us, He will teach us, and we will be saved.

Please do not listen to Satan, who tells you lies to make God look unfair, unjust, and an evil god. Do not allow those who belong to Satan trick you into believing lies about our loving Father.

In these last days right before the Lord’s second coming, Satan and his evil people will be working over-time to trick you into believing that our Creator is evil, and Satan is the good one, when it is the other way around. God is pure goodness and love where Satan is pure evil. Open your eyes and seek God while He can still be found.

Please do not listen to those who put God down because all they want to do is keep you out of the kingdom of God.

Answer #12

Captian,

I just now read your question to me: “So what happens to the people that don’t know him? How will they be judged?”

If people are choosing to do good instead of bad; even if they’ve never heard of God, they’ll go to heaven, but if they choose to do bad, they will not. God wrote His laws on our hearts and if we follow what is right, we’ll know it.

funadvice, you said that Orion insulted homosexuals. Did you know that aids began in the homosexual lifestyle before it spread thru blood transfusions to heterosexuals? This is why she thought aids was a penalty of the act.

Answer #13

You will go to hell only if you will not accept Jesus as your own personal Savior..even if you say you are good..we’re here because of God’s grace and the only thing that we should focus in our life is to serve Him..obey His word and accept that He is your God..religion doesn’t matter..our own personal relationship with Him is what really matters..Jesus loves you..

The Christians believe that God has many sheep in many flocks, which means that God has true believers in different religions. Not any certain religion only will go to heaven, but many…

Maybe YOUR church believes that (which is indeed a good thing), but most Christian denominations do not. You should try and get that to catch on… it would be beneficial.

God is male: ‘Let Us make man in Our image’

So… does that mean women were NOT made in God’s image?

Calling God ‘it’ is a HUGE insult to God

Really? Does the bible say that?

Answer #18

You expect people to show respect to christians, but then you constantly speak to non-believers as being inferior, or immoral, or being bound for hell for not believing in something as unknowable as a deity. You respond to people as if the things you BELIEVE are fact. If there is a god as described in the bible, I want nothing to with IT. For IT is one vane, cruel, vindictive SOB!

Answer #19

Also, I used it becouse there are any different gods all over in differrent culturs some may be animals I use “it” becouse I’m not specificaly talking about your god ok christians.

Answer #20

Can we get some people of any religion other than Christianity in here so that we may broaden the views expressed here in, and learn something new?

Probably not. Most of the people on this site who practice religions other than Christianity DON’T feel the need to prove (in their minds) that they’re beliefs are the only beliefs that are right.

Answer #21

orion stated that ‘God is not an ‘it’ and to imply that God is an ‘it’ is a direct insult to us as Christians and, most importantly, to God Himself. So, please stop calling God ‘it’.’

Why? Where in your doctrine does it require you to be offended by the word ‘it’ ??

Answer #22

I’m sorry you found the use of the word it offencive but, in some religons gods are feamale.

these people scare me…

Dont forget, there are still many cultures in the world that have never heard of Christianity, nor share any monotheitic system of beliefs. So why would God condemn these people when the circumstances prevent them from knowing about him?

Answer #24

I think that if there was (is) a God and there was (is) a Heaven and Hell, and that if he (or she) is a good God, that it would make sense that good people would not go to Hell. I say, Just be a good person and hope for the best.

You should practice what you preach… peaches…

Answer #27

jimahl, there is no reason for you to insult God and Christians.

Where is your dignity? Your honor, your integrity?

When someone has a difference of opinion with another person, it shows nobility of character if they allow the other’s right to disagree with their view point, without name calling or/and out and out insulting what they believe in.

It makes me think of a kid in first grade not getting his way, so he, in a fit of anger, calls the other names and such…I think it’s time to grow up.

You may not love or respect God, but there is no reason to insult what we believe in.

Answer #28

orion said: “God is a holy being, which denotes respect. You don’t call your dad ‘it’ do you? NO! You don’t call your Mom an ‘it’ do you? NO! Well God is much greater than any human being who has ever lived.”

If IT is meaningless to you, calling it IT is of no consequence. If you don’t want to call it IT, that is your perogative. But in my opinion, the IT described in your book of fiction is one vidinctive, evil SOB. If IT were real, I would have a couple of better words for IT that would probably get me banned from this site…

Answer #29

Father, Son, and Holy Ghost == Male

…really? All three of them, huh? Tell me, exactly which part of ‘holy ghost’ denotes masculinity? Hmmm?

cap, the Bible is all about honoring God, our Creator by worshipping Him, keeping holy His ten commandments, and loving others.

Uh huh… which one? The Jewish God or the Christian God?

Why not show a little mature mentality and stop insulting God.

I’m not insulting anyone, I’m simply asking questions, and YOU are starting to act like the stereotypical Christian: defensive and snappy. How disappointing…

Besides, the bible proves nothing. Its a book, written by men, and canonized by men, during a male-dominant time period. THAT is why the book says God is male. Because MALES wrote it.

Oh, and you avoided the questions again. You’ve been doing that a lot.

Answer #30

God the “Father” == Male

Father, Son, and Holy Ghost == Male

He, His, Son, Father === Male, Male, Male!

Not girl, gal, woman, not female either, but MALE!

God is a holy being, which denotes respect. You don’t call your dad “it” do you? NO! You don’t call your Mom an “it” do you? NO! Well God is much greater than any human being who has ever lived.

I’m sorry you found the use of the word it offencive but, in some religons gods are feamale.

I don’t really understand why this is such a sensitive issue. God made BOTH male and females, and they were created in God’s image. I doubt God would be gender specific, and what would God have sexual organs for anyway?

God would not send people to hell if they’ve never heard of Him or Christianity. God has written His laws on our hearts to let us all know what is right and what is wrong. There are good and bad people all over the world and even those people who have never heard about God. So, if a person chooses bad, they’ll go to hell unless they repent and turn from their wicked ways and do good.

Answer #36

In my religion, I believe that if you don’t trust in Jesus as your savior, you will not go to heaven. and God does care whether you belive or not, becuase yes he could show himself providing proof that there is a God(same way Jesus could have saved himself on the cross, but he didn’t, because he loves us), but He wants us to believe in Him without having to see him, it’s easy to believe when you physically see something.

Answer #37

That depends on your beliefs. No one can answer that question for sure, because obviously no ones died, gone to heaven/hell, talked to god, and come back.

I believe that as long as your a good person at heart, if there is an afterlife, it will be good for you. Plain and simple. Innocent, good people won’t be punished for something petty like that. The god I believe in only cares whether you’re a good person, and not an evil evil soul at heart.

Answer #38

In islam we believe that someone that isn’t muslim will be given a second chance and if they were a person of good heart then they will be rewared

“but His death does become of effect when a person ceases to breathe, if you believe in Jesus, you’ll go to Heaven, and if you don’t then you’ll go to Hell, having faith in Jesus greatly effects what happens after your last breath.”

That was my point. According to Christian beliefs, we all have until our expiration date to make up our minds about Jesus. Which would make God’s love conditional and his salvation exclusive.

“apparently, God and Jesus are not too easy to belive in, because there are so many people who don’t believe in them. once you taste the punishments of hell, there’s no coming back, that’s the point of the punishment, it’s eternal.”

Punishment is, by legal definition, temporary and reforming. If hell is eternal, that would make it cruel and unusual punishment, which doesn’t speak well for the Christian God.

flossheal - my son is jewish (actually he was on this site first and told me about it). he left the site because of the responses by some christians regarding the physical appearance of jews and the constant christian statements that he is going to hell.

I have read some responses on this site regarding muslims and if I were muslim, I would stay far away. constantly being referred to as a terrorist is not something that I would want to read.

Answer #47

If you want to get technical, ever uttering the phrase “thank god” for something non-miraculous is technically using it’s name in vein.

God is not male, or female. “It” is something that I can’t express in words, therefore I use the word it.

Here is one of the definitions of the word “It” straight from the dictionary:

“It -used to represent a person or animal understood, previously mentioned, or about to be mentioned whose gender is unknown or disregarded.

Refering to God as an “it” when speaking of it’s sex is actually the best word one can use. I’ve been told that God is “The person of all people” my entire life, and no one on earth knows what god’s sex is, if it even has one. The term isn’t used or meant in a degrading way.

And, to reiterate a point that the_anti_prep, and even I said earlier. She did not at any point in time say she was christian, she wants a view from all religions. The person out of all the Christians(if he is Christian, I don’t want to assume you are if you aren’t) or more so brings the best point of view to this discussion is mjax1979. He is taking this calmly, and speaks in such a way as to where he understands that his religion is not the only one on this planet.

I don’t know what God you other christians believe in, but the god I believe in would not condemn to hell someone who has no possible way to have been taught Christianity and has no access to any type of referance of Christianity. There are tribes and people whom have never come into contact with a Christian or anything even relating to Christian belief. If you’re trying to tell me, through absolutely no fault of their own, God would send them to hell when there is no possible way they could have ever heard anything about Christianity? And if that’s the case, than wouldn’t God be at fault for not having sent a missionary, or person to those places to spread it’s word? Does that mean they get a default entrance to Heaven because he has been unable or hasn’t wanted to send someone there yet?

I’m not Jewish myself(I don’t label myself as anything, I believe in God, and believe that so long as you do well in life and have faith in general, than no matter your religion or beliefs, all will be well when you pass). I had a Jewish friend while I was in the army, and he said that Jews (or at least the way he was brought up) don’t believe in hell, to them it’s like it doesn’t exist. So you(anti_prep) wouldn’t have to worry about it in that case.

I’m not sure what exactly the full Muslim,Hindu, or Buddhist belief is either, I haven’t studied them yet. Sorry I can’t be of more help to you there.

And one last note to the “Super Christians”: I’ve said this before and I will reiterate. What you yourself believe in(whether you believe in Christ,or Buddha, or Alla) is irrelevant here. You can believe in whatever you want, and you can speak your beliefs, as long as you clarify them as YOUR BELIEFS. The U.S. Constitution CLEARLY says that you DO NOT have the right to force your religion on someone else, or even so much as to say what they believe in is wrong. If you want to argue with me, and say “Well my religious beliefs are more important than the laws of man” Isn’t there something somewhere called the dogmatic law that says “What you hold true on Earth, I will hold true in Heaven” or something similar. It was the entire basis for a Kevin Smith movie. If that’s the case, than God would have to honor(and in fact by giving us free will, he does) the fact that you CAN NOT force your religious beliefs on anyone else, or to even speak to someone who has different beliefs in a way that makes your beliefs sound as though they are they only right, and whatever said person believes in is wrong.

I asked, very early in this topic, if you people could so much as open a line with the words “In my belief” or “In my religion” or anything else that makes it clear that the words to follow are YOUR beliefs, that you yourself believe in, and do not necessarily hold true to anyone else that reads them but yourself.

This isn’t meant to be aflame, it’s a request. A request to stay on focus to the subject of the question, and not try to bring about another freaking Inquisition.

Can we get some people of any religion other than Christianity in here so that we may broaden the views expressed here in, and learn something new?

Answer #48

This is what I know to be true: God being pure cannot even look upon sin - man, even in his very best state is a sinner - on judgement day, either: your sins are covered by the blood-shed sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross (salvation and only salvation - being a nice person isn’t good enough - even at our very best, we are but filthy rags), and remembered no more or they are not (your sins are not covered) - where God’s great love comes into play is, He provided a WAY (Jesus) for us not to perish and live in Heaven with Him (He certainly didn’t have to do this but did because He loved us so) - if you read carefully John 3:16, this is exactly what it says - each person will either accept or reject, you must decide for yourself and yes, it’s so important, it has eternal consequences - He Loves you and wants you to accept God’s free gift to man - Jesus…Take care !!
