What should I study to become a journalist?

Well, I’m in SIngapore and Im going to junior college next year, which requires me to choose my subject combination of 4 subjects from these subjects: Maths, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, China Studies, Literature, History, Economics, Arts, Geography. I have already chosen Maths and Chemistry, I’m not sure about the other two. What other two subjects would benefit me the most if I want to major in journalism and mass media in university, like public relations or media work,? I dont think Im going to take literature, because I dont think my English skill is good enough for it. im thinking of History and China Studies.

Hey there, Im from Singapore as well, going to JC next year

Honestly, I suggest you either pursue a subject you like rather than thinking for your future. The Singapore education system only cares how many As you score in your exams, not which subjects you take, for job admission

I would say geography and economics. I am not certain that math and chemistry would benefit you if you are looking for classes specifically for a major in journalism and mass media. I would say in addition to the two I already said, take art and history. If you do not think your English skills are very good, see if there is any way that you could take a class to help you improve your English. The class does not necessarily have to be at your junior college.

Wow, college works completely different there:)

If it really is 100% like leevan says, then do that. You may also want to take a subject that can help you in the field itself. Your classes sound great, but I would maybe replace the ‘China Studies’ with Economics. Economics is not easy for most people, so I’m sure that people may be impressed if you score an A. You don’t typically learn about current economic situations in great detail, but rather, how to understand the economy as a whole. You learn how it functions, what common terms mean, how to predict highs and lows, etc…these are pretty important things for most journalists to know, as you will often have stories about the economy, how the economy affects people, or the current issues surrounding the economy, etc.

Best of luck!
