I wouldn’t reccomend Runescape or IMVU, a lot of good mmorpg’s are p2p, pay 2 play and require membership.
Some of the best are:-
World of Warcraft (Over 8 million players) LoTR online (Quite new but great graphics for an online mmorpg) Guild Wars (I have never played but some say it is good)
World Of Warcraft +20million players worldwide. 12 bucks per month though. HUGE game but EXTREMLY addictive lol but hey, I met my girlfriend online lol so im lucky I guess
