What is truth?

I thought it’s time for some nice and healthy philisophical questions on this thing. Im studying philosophy at the moment. So the question is pretty much straight forward. I just want to know what you think ‘truth’ is

Answer #1

truth isnt bullshit… but it will be if it hurts, to that person :S

‘does my arse look big in this?’ Yes, it looks huge like 2 planets bouncing around in space…

truthful but hurtful: if yuo dont want it dont ask lol

Answer #2

Hmm.. in my opinion I think truth is whatever someone wants it to be, you make not know what it really is but thats not going to stop you from believin it. Truth is also honesty, but is you really think about it, everyone has their own ideas about what truth is :)

Answer #3

truth is how we interpret facts everyones truth about the facts can vary just because somethings true to you doesn’t make it a fact and just because its a fact doesn’t make it true.

Answer #4

Only trivial questions with simple universally agreed on rules can be determined to be objectively true or false.

Consider the following equation:

1 + 1 + 1 = 1

Is this true or false? If you are talking about pencils than you end up with 3 pencils. How about if three rivers merge into a single one. In this case the equation could be argued to be true; adding three rivers together makes a single river.

There is ambiguity in nearly every question. A college student reading math word problems from a 3rd grade workbook may come up with different answers because they have more contexts to apply to the problem.

If everyone agreed on the same set of rules, for example those of Euclidean geometry we can determine the veracity of statements. Of course the Euclidean universe is an artificial one; it could be argued that only theoretical problem spaces can produce entirely true or false statements. Statements that can unequivocally be declared true are a tiny portion of all propositions and usually aren’t particularly interesting.

All of us live in subjective reality. Things are true or false to us. We may think our wives beautiful and our offspring intelligent but no doubt there are people who looking at these truths who feel differently.

Objective reality can be said to be that which still exists when nobody believes it. You can argue that God exists because to believers he does. If nobody believed would God still exist?
