Mormons follow the newest Christian denomination created by Joseph Smith, a man that was arrested for fraud, TWICE. Look him up. He went to jail, he fathered children out of wedlock, then created the religion and moved to Missouri, then Utah.

Off my soap box (I just think all religions have funny beginnings…it takes funny people to believe them). I know a few mormons in the military. They are very nice people, they are extremely family oriented and value education.

I have a problem with Mormonism. Do you know how many thousands of women have lived horrible lives in communes? I know I know…those are the EXTREMISTS, right? No. It wasn’t until 50 years ago that the Mormon church stopped polygamy, due to federal law. If you want to be an oppressed woman, convert to Mormonism. If you want a lot of wives, do the same thing.

But get in good shape. If you go on your mission for 1-2 years, you’ll be riding a bike!

I agree with countrygirl - if you’re interested in learning more, consult the websites she mentions.

As for the ‘oddities’ - they can’t be important! I mean, even if there were such a thing as ‘Mormon underwear’, should that stop you from converting if you otherwise felt that their beliefs were right for you?

Answer #7

In addition to the above info, I would recommend reading Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer. It’s an excellent balanced overview of the religion with some scandal thrown in for flavor.

Answer #8

I heard that they think when they die they can be like God and own planets. They have to wear mormon underwear so they don’t go to hell< LOL thats all I know..but im not mormon.

Answer #9

Katey’s answer isn’t true of all Mormons. Very few communities live without electricity or modern conveniences (maybe you’re thinking of old-order Amish?). However, home-.schooling is quite common (as with many other religious groups) , especially if the other people in the area are mostly non-Mormon.

Answer #10

^^^I heard that they live without electricty and modern day stuff and are home schooled^^^

Aren’t you thinking more of the Amish religion.

Answer #11

Dear friend, Much as I’d like to answer your question, it’s just too big to deal with properly here. (No, I am not a Mormon, but I am interested in religious questions.)

The basic difference between the Chutrch of Latter-day Saints (the Mormon Church) is that they believe that their founder, Joseph Smith, received relevations from an angel, telling about Christ’s visit to the Native Americans long ago. These teachings form the basis of the Book of Mormon. However, they also believe in the teachings of the Bible, and thus are counted as a Christian denomination

Their website www.mormonbeliefs.org gives good explanations of all aspects of the Mormon faith. Another, independent, site is www.religionfacts.com/mormonism/beliefs.htm

Answer #12

I heard that they live without electricty and modern day stuff and are home schooled

Answer #13

I’m curious why you wish to find out about “Mormonism”.

And yes, polygamy was a big part of it, until the Feds put an end to it.

I’m a Mormon, member of the main stream Church. I’d be happy to give you balanced information about it, or the Fundamentalist off shoots.

Answer #14

to steph nish - forget about the underwear, or polygamy issues for that matter, and have a look at those websites for factual, updated and relevant information on the main ideas of the Mormon faith. Every faith has some oddities, but they shouldn’t be counted as the main thing.
