What happend with the electric cars?

Before the electric car was more seen and heard of, now you will rarely even hear about it. What gives?

Electric motors are much more efficient than gasoline engines, simpler (less moving parts), easier to repair/replace, and quicker when it comes to acceleration (given similar size). It just makes more sense.
