What grades do I need to be a Psychiatrist?

If you are in the U.S.

It doesnt matter what you do in high school as long as you do well and get good SAT scores.

Step 1 - Bachelors: 4 year degree. You’ll have to follow a pre-medical track. There’s several requirements including, 1 year of general chemistry and 1 year of organic chemistry, 1 year of physics, 1 year of calculus, 1 year general biology, several other biology classes (anatomy, physiology, biochemistry etc etc). Most people end up with a chemistry minor and a lot of people major in biology. If you’re interested in psychiatry, then you may want to major in psychology or neuroscience. You dont take too many classes in the humanities (anthropology, sociology or communications). To get into a neuroscience track, you’ll need a high (around a 3.5) GPA. To get into a medical school, you’ll need a high GPA ( >3.75) and good MCAT scores.

Step 2 - Medical school: 4 year degree.

Step 3 - Residency: 4 years of practicing medicine

As for what you do as a psychiatrist, well that depends. There’s some that work in private practice. Some will do therapy as well as dispense medication. Some will only dispense medication. Some work in hospital psychiatric wards, they oversee patients. They usually do not have too much contact with them, mostly just diagnosing and treating with medication. Some do research in labs, either in universities, or in hospitals. Some write books and consult. There’s a lot of things a psychiatrist can do…
