What do you think of body scanners as added security in airports?

With the recent botched terrorist attack by the Nigerian guy (Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab) grabbing headlines there have been calls for airports to step up security and install quicker and most importantly more effective security technology.

One of the gadgets being considered at many airports is the full body scanner (not sure what the real name is), which is a machine that well, scans the whole body, including your insides and your privates. It’s worth noting that Farouk himself managed to evade security by concealing his explosives under his underwear. However, privacy activists claim this is a step too far and encroaches upon the personal privacy of passengers.

Opinions anyone? How do you think we should strike the balance between privacy and protecting passengers (with regards to the use of full body scanners)

Answer #1

Absolutely… and I like that quote… I had to rate it at the other scanner question.

Answer #2

You got it miscegenymiser… It is all scam to make sure we stay afraid and need the protection of private contractors to feel safe…

Answer #3

But wait guys… Michael Chertoff says that these body scanners are an invaluable means of flight passenger safety. Who better to listen to than the old Homeland Security Czar?

On a completely unrelated note… The Chertoff Group… headed by one Michael Chertoff… stands to have a banner year as they represent Rapiscan Systems… builder of whole body imaging machines. They’ve already filled an order for 150 machines to the tune of $25 million from TSA… funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Sorry, not buying the ‘privacy or a bomb blowing up your town’ argument. I am all for good, effective security measures. But as others have said, we should let not tiny number of misanthropes cause us to completely over-react to a situation. We should not be letting them change our ideals of privacy and civil rights.

As Franklin said: “They, who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty nor security.”

Answer #5

I think that the full body scanners are deffinately worth it. If hundreds of people and millions of dollars can be saved just by giving up those couple minutes of privacy, then go for it. Whatever keeps people safe.

Answer #6

What would you rather have privacy or a bomb blowing up your town…? We have to protect us somehow…I think its just somthing we gotta do..If you dont like it dont fly. Not trying to be rude there but its the truth. I dont wanna have to deal with another attack in the USA. Because look at all the trouble it has cause and because that one attack its caused us to go into this rescesion. We wouldnt be spending all these billions of dollers putting troops over there if 9/11 didnt happen. It also caused us to try and “help” them repair there country and spend tons of money that we dont have…Caused gas prices to go up. and so on. But yea if we dont want things to get worse we gotta stop it before it happens. Hope I helped…Rate if you like. ps happy new year

LOL..Toadaly, fancy sitting naked next to you on aisle 15F ;)

I think it’s time for all of us to be wearing nice clean, presentable knickers. Reckon the person/s whoever had the job scanning passengers would have a field day. Could you imagine the giggles and shock faces when something strange appeared on their monitors.

Back to the question: whatever measures are needed to keep passengers safe in the sky, taking off and landing, then I’m all for the body scanners.

Answer #8

Because look at all the trouble it has cause and because that one attack its caused us to go into this rescesion.

Huh?

What happens is, thousands of people fly safely every day with no danger of getting hijacked. One person figures out a way around the security procedures and tries to hijack a plane. No matter how amateurish or ineffective the attempt, the story makes headlines and scares everybody into agreeing to even more intrusive procedures.

These full body scanners aren’t going to make any difference in overall airport security. I’m disappointed that Schipol is using them.

Answer #9

Hey there thanks for the reply.

I actually agree that we should be using scanners like these. I know, if we don’t like it, don’t fly - but the reality is, especially so for business travellers, not flying is simply not an option.

I think the scanners are still okay since they do not actually take “nude” pictures, just something like an xray - I think. Plus apparently the pictures can’t be stored in memory chips or whatever so you can’t say, keep it for private purposes :P

However, I think there is a line we can’t cross. “Would you rather have privacy or a bomb blowing up your town” Well, if airports started doing naked strip searches for everyone…

Answer #10

Lol a naked one wud prollywork the same as a xray one unless you can make a bomb or powder clear. The xray one shud work just fine. haha The only ones working a nude one wud be the pervs haha Happy new years

Answer #11

Why not just have us all fly naked and submit to body cavity searches? Hey, if you don’t like it, just don’t fly.
