Cold sores generally last 7 to 10 days without treatment.

Prescription Acyclovir is one option. There is also the over-the-counter medication Abreva. I find that applying Abreva as soon as I feel the tingle (generally the first sign of a cold sore coming on is a tingly feeling) the sores do not get large and go away quicker.

Taking high doses (several grams) of lysine may help. Two of my doctors suggested this and the rest said they have no idea if it actually works but won’t hurt. It seems to help me.

Being a trombone player when I was younger cold sores were a major pain and nuisance. I also tended to get them at the worst possible time like before auditions and recitals.

You definitely don’t want to be kissing on your date with a cold sore or even a few days after it clears up.

You can ask your doctor for an ointment called Acyclovir, it’s only helpful during the early stages and it may prevent the spreading of sores and blisters. It may not work for you though, some strands of herpes don’t respond to this ointment. It’s usually transmitted when you have an open sore but it can still be transmitted when no signs are showing. I’d be a bit risky to kiss someone when you have it.

I would consider waiting, I know that you want to kiss your date but herpes is highly contagious and skin to skin contact can easily spread it. You should tell your date about it, a lot of people have herpes simplex -1, around 85% of people do. Just keep in mind that herpes doesn’t have a cure so you’re stuck with it for life.
