What could be wrong with this kitten?

Two weeks ago, my cat had three kittens.

Two of the kittens are big and healthy looking. They have their eyes open, and they move around a lot.

The third kitten however is very small, skinny, and always looks tired. His eyes are open, but he doesn’t move around much. You can feel his rib cage when you hold him, and his legs feel very limp. Could he be sick? Or just developing later than the other two?

My brother thinks buying kitten milk might help. Should we try that?

Answer #1

The smallest kitten is called a runt. Nothing is wrong with it, its completly normal. HAHA!

Answer #2

yeah kitten milk would help its probs the runt of the litter so the other 2 are mebe takin all the milk and its not getting enough so try the kitten milk ,hope it helps!

Answer #3

Sorry to hear that, but its natural, its natures way of moving forward, the weak die and the strong survive. Its good that you really tried though.

Answer #4

I’m sorry to hear that…at least you tried, right?

It’s quite normal for one of the kittens to die, so don’t feel like you didn’t do enough to help it.

Answer #5

If the mother isn’t helping it, you’ll also have to help it release it’s bowels on top of supplementing it’s diet.

You do this with a warm, damp washcloth - just wipe the bottom end gently until it pees and poops.

I’ve wet-nursed many litters, so if you have any questions, don’t be afraid to ask.

ichibanarky- We bought the kitten formula and an eye dropper. It ate quite a bit earlier, and I’ll feed it again in a couple hours (the jug of formula said every four hours). It also said on it to do what you said. I’ll do that in a few minutes when my back stops hurting enough to get out of bed.

If it lives through the night, and we’re not sure it will, we’re gonna call a vet. We can’t afford it, but we really want this poor kitten to live.

Answer #7

It could be that it is just the runt kitten, but kitten milk might help. Since the baby is only two weeks old, you may have to get a little bottle so it can be fed.

Also, make sure that the mother is getting tons of nutrients!

Answer #8

How about taking the animal to your local shelter or SPCA? They are usually free or very low cost and should be able to advise you on what to do.

I also think that your brother has a point. buy him some kitten milk and feed him in addition to the mother feeding him. Else the poor thing might not make it.

Answer #9

I should also mention that I have no money for a vet. My dad is on disability, my mom gets paid every two weeks, and I have no job. So we just can’t afford to take it to the vet. Any suggestions of what to do at home would be appreciated. If nothing works, I’ll have to find some way to get it to the vet.

Answer #10

It’s normal for one kitten to be smaller than the rest - that’s the runt.

You certainly can supplement it’s diet with cat’s milk and a dropper, though, if you’re concerned about it not eating enough. He does sound to be a little weak, so I think it’s a good idea to help him out.

Answer #11

It would be best to take the kitten to the vet, because it sounds like there is a possibliity that he is sick. The vet will be able to give him a checkup to rule out serious problems and then instruct you on how to care for him (he is most likely just the runt of the litter) For now, keep him warm, and make sure he is getting his fill of mom’s milk, because sometimes the runt will be pushed aside by the bigger kittens at feeding time. Good luck and I hope he’s OK! :)

Answer #12

I’m gonna try to get my mom to buy kitten milk for it when she gets paid.

The kitten is tiny and cold to touch. It doesn’t move much, and it doesn’t seem to be eating. It doesn’t even cry when you pick it up like the others do. Then, it’ll just lay in your hand, where the other two will crawl around.

The mother cat cleans the other two and lays with them, but she doesn’t seem to want aything to do with the other one. I really want this poor kitten to live, but I don’t know what to do to help it.

Answer #13

just be very loving and caring to the small kitten. the other 2 will be fine, and the mother ill probably take care of them. but the mum might be inclined to reject the small one because thats what happens int the wild. so just watch out for the small one. it probably has a 50/50 chance of surviving. make sure its warm and dry at all times and is drinking water and eating at least just a little bit.

Answer #14

Sounds like the runt of the litter. You need to make sure that it is warm, clean and has enough milk - that is essential to its development. The most likely cause is sibling rivalry, the other siblings are competing for the milk etc. and this kitten is missing out. If you do buy milk, make sure that is is specially formulated for kittens so that it is getting all of the essential nutrients. If the kitten begins to show signs of illness, not being able to stand, and really not developing, I advise that you consult a vet. Best of luck!
