What if it wasn't Stockholm Syndrome?

So I was reading stories on one of those internet sites and I came across one story where this is the blurb bit:

—The law says he’s guilty of kidnap, rape and false imprisonment. The shrink says she’s a victim of Stockholm Syndrome. For Sarah, they are neither. They are in love and he is the father of her unborn child. A story of love under criminal circumstances.—

So say it actually wasn’t Stockholm syndrome and you were really in love what would happen. Well obviously the perpetrator would go to jail but what is the lawyers and the therapists find out that the victim isn’t suffering from Stockholm syndrome. Would that change things?

Here’s the problem. It is just assumed it is stockholm syndrome, there’s no actual way to check whether it is ‘real’ love or if the person has been brainwashed into thinking they’re in love (the victim does believe they are truly in love). And in this particular case, I dont see how it would change things? The victim didnt commit any crimes… Sometimes stockholm syndrome is used as a defense. In this case, i dont see what exactly would be different for the victim?
