Why can't I update my friend's iPod?

So my friend gave me her iPod to update with songs from my macbook and now im trying to put songs on it, but it doesnt work. Cant i do this? Or is there something i have to do first or something?

Does it give you the option to sync it? or you can simply add songs by clicking, and highlighting your songs and then dragging it to the iPod on iTunes.
