Training puppy to stop jumping on visitors?

How do I stop my puppy from jumping on visitors. It seems that every time someone comes to my house my puppy wants to jump on them. How do I stop it?

I like what mysterwolf says about having them sit near the door, like 8 feet away, when the doorbell rings. One of the best ways of working on this is having a friend knock or ring, while you’re inside “teaching” the pup that he must stay until he’s released (much better than having someone standing out there wondering what all the commotion behind the door is)…Of course a puppy class would help immensely in this, as you’d already be working on the “stay”.

Remember dogs learn in “layers”…you teach it to “stay” when you are 2 feet away, then 4 feet away, then 8 feet away…etc etc…You put him on a leash, ask him to stay when the door bell rings…the first couple times, the excitment of the knock or the bell might be overwhelming for puppy…but you take him back to where he started an say “STAY” (put your out in front of his face in the same way you would stop traffic).

Repeat till he stays…he’ll probably stay till you open the door, but you will just put him back where he was. When he finally stays there, let your friend in…call puppy and have him come and “SIT”…Tell you friend not to make eye contact, nor to say ANYTHING to the pup until all four are on the floor. Even if it’s 2 seconds, LOVE HIM UP. You do this once or twice a day for 10 days, and you’ll be amazed at how mannerly he greets people at the door.

Has your puppy gone to obedience school yet? Or puppy pre-school? It’s important to get your puppy to these classes as it teaches your puppy on how to be a good puppy around many people, and it helps them socialize which will make slightly less over-excited when there are people (or new people) around.

Let your puppy approach near the door, but teach your puppy to sit when someone comes through the door and your puppy wants to greet the person. Train your puppy to do this with you first. You come through the door, see your puppy and tell him to sit. If he does, give him LOTS of pats, hugs, and a small treat. If he doesn’t sit, ignore him and go about your usual business. Keep doing this, and over time your puppy will understand that if someone comes through the door and he sits, he will get treats and lots of attention, and vice versa if he doesn’t.

Good luck with training :)

ok, well the next time he jumps on you hold his feet until his back legs get tired, this generally discourages jumping
