Do you think Tim Horton's made a smart move by renaming the sizes of their coffee cups?

Today, the change went into effect - a small coffee is now an extra small, medium is now a small, and so on.

Was this a smart move, market-wise, or is the whole thing just plain pointless?

I don’t think it’s a good idea because us costumers are use to the regular sizes and it’s going to be hard for us to remember these new ones.

Does anyone actually buy an 8oz coffee? And can anyone drink 24oz of coffee before it gets unappetizingly cold?

Four sizes is too many. I’d go with 2, a 10 oz small and a 18 oz large. Price the 10 oz coffee the same as the old 8 oz coffee. Does the extra 2 oz of coffee cost Tim Horton’s even a penny? No doubt the simpler ordering would help customers and staff by not having to explain 4 sizes.

If their market research indicates customers want a bladder busting flagon of coffee than offer a reusable well insulated 28 oz coffee club mug for a few bucks. Regulars who want 28 oz would bring back their mug for refills at the same price as a large and being insulated it will keep coffee at an agreeable temperature longer. Not using another cup would help pay for the extra 8 oz of coffee and this would also appeal to the green crowd as well.

I am a TH manager… The way I PERSONALLY see it… bringing in the 24oz is fine, but instead of renaming all the cups (which is JUST as confusing for us) they should have just given the new cup a new name like XXL or Jumbo like so many have requested. I know it has only been ONE day, but for the next 3 weeks, it’s going to be hectic trying to explain the whole thing to our guests. A lot of them get it, yes… but then there are those that don’t like the unfamiliar. the new 24 oz is MASSIVE, and we do believe that they will be eventually phasing out the (new) Extra Small size.

Per ounce, the prices are the same. The new XL is $2 depending where you are. (apparently, Toronto is different from Oakville- which is where I am). Regardless… no, prices have not changed, only the names did. Was it necessary to go through the trouble of changing the names? No.

But it takes time and we will all get used to it.

i think if you drink coffee from home you’ll save hundreds of dollars a year.
