Who here thinks with every release of Windows the OS becomes more and more bloated?

I also hate who I have to spend a day tweaking the OS before I can even use windows 7 for my work

Answer #1

I feel like Microsoft has a trend where they release a new version, then have to release a version immediately after because their previous release sucked. I ran XP, then had to buy another desktop which came with Vista and it crashed, so I ended up with Windows 7.

Now I just spend a lot of time in Mac’s OS X Leopard, which I love. It took me no time to figure out how to use it and it’s capable of being fully customized to my taste without forcing me to jump through hoops.

If Microsoft ever gets back onto that XP track, I’ll be a believer once more though.

I actually feel like with every new version, the OS becomes less bloated.

When XP came out, it was included with Movie Maker, Messenger, and MSN Explorer. After Vista and 7 came out, those programs are now part of the Windows Live suite that you can download off the site. That saved an extra GB or two from installation.

Redesigns of the kernel and GUI helped make the OS quicker and so it was also getting rid of bloat by removing older registries and such. In Windows 8, they will have a new feature for restoring your PC to factory settings, which is something new that Windows never had, but it doesn’t take up any space at all.

A lot of people hate Windows OS because some (not all) people don’t read the specifications on the box and automatically assume their PC will work with it. I know users who returned Vista and 7 saying it was too slow or didn’t work. I had Vista and 7 on a 6 year old P4 machine with 1.5GB of RAM and it ran smoothly.

To answer the question a little better, there’s a difference between having bloatware (OEM installed PC) and a clean installation from yourself. Also, tweaking the OS is a personal thing, since I never had to tweak anything in 7 yet, and if I did, it’d be pointless since it already runs so quick. The only thing I did tweak though, is the UAC since the dimming of the screen is annoying, especially during movies. I think overall Windows has gotten quicker and less bloated.
