Is Splenda and other artificial sweeteners bad for you?

Answer #1

No, however, its said that they can cause some cancers.

Answer #2

well i could care less about cancer. Breathing now-a-days can cause cancer so i’m not to worried if that is the only thing that is wrong with them.

Answer #3

Yeah i thinks thats all.

Answer #4

I tend to think that they are. The body can process natural sugar much better. The same with fake butter (margarine) The cholesterol is’nt that much lower than real butter, and the body can process the real stuff. Did you know that “hydrogenated” vegetable oil is only one molecule away from being plastic? That’s why I buy and use “real” butter.

Answer #5

Even if it were true that margarine is “one molecule away from being plastic” this is chemically meaningless. When I was a teen margarine was made of hydrogenated fat and sold as a healthier alternative to butter. In 1978 my high school chemistry teacher told us that contrary to marketing hydrogenated oil is not healthier than butter. Even though he was well ahead of his time it turns out he didn’t go far enough. We now know that hydrogenated oil is far worse for us than butter, tallow, or lard. Now that we know hydrogenated oils are bad margarine has little or none but I’m with you; I’d rather eat something closer to its natural state. I use very little fat cooking so what I use I want to taste as good as possible so all I use is butter or olive oil. The only non-caloric sweetener I use is an herbal one called stevia. I don’t trust artificial sweeteners either.

Answer #6

one molecule away from plastic you say and so is hydrogen it’s one a way from water and you drink water but not good to breath hydrogen. stupid reference and i hate it.

but you are correct in the idea that processed food is far worse than natural food. real butter is made of corn and milk so it’s better. sugar is harvest from a plant.

Answer #7

i heard Stevia is better for you because its a natural sweetener :*)

Answer #8

One effect of any artificial sweetener is that its sweetness, as with natural sweeteners, triggers the release of insulin into the bloodstream to control the rush of calories it has signaled your body to expect. Since there is no rush of calories to match the insulin level, your blood sugar is likely to drop very low, creating a craving for new calories to replenish it - hunger. Over time, such disruptions of the insulin cycle can lead to insulin resistance and ultimately diabetes.

Answer #9

Researchers have found out that prolonged use of maltodextrin which is a substance use in processing Splenda may have a higher chance to lead to cancer. But there is no any conclusive data as to how much maltodextrin a person should consume, so one would know if the levels are alarming or not.

There is also another herbal sweetener called Stevia. If Splenda is the artificial sweetener, Stevia is considered as natural sweetener. After years of scientific investigation, there is no any conclusive findings that Stevia can be harmful to humans.

Your choices on sweeteners will depend on your health needs and personal preference.
