Why does the U.S. spend so much on the defense budget?

Should it be cut back?

Answer #1

Of course it should be cut back. We spend more federal dollars on “defense” (which is code for invading other countries and propping up Israel and Egypt) than every other country in the world, combined.

Then there’s the domestic issue which is that the next five largest budget items get less money, combined, than the “defense” budget. As a percentage of Federal spending, it’s higher than ever.

The question is…with the Republican transition and the democrats lacking the cajones to actually man up and do something, do they have the guts to follow through on their age old “reduce federal spending” that so many of them, Bush included, claimed was a core party value?

Personally, I’m disappointed in them all…but, remain hopeful that somebody, somewhere, will have the courage to stand up for what they got elected for in the first place.

Would you rather we didn’t? Apparently it is working, we haven’t fought a war on American soil since the civil war. The few attacks we’ve had are delt with and moved away to be fought. We spend that much so you can wake up every morning and not have to worry about gun fights in the street outside your house. The question that should be asked is why are we spending so much $$ on welfare programs and government assistance? I say give the military every penny it wants and start making our citizens responsible for themselves.

The US Secretary of Defense, Robert Gates, has said he wants to cut $100 billion out of the country’s defense budget and is looking for ways to do so.
